Email technology as we know it now is rather ancient and has remained mostly unaltered throughout the years. Some of the phrases linked with email that are still in use today date back to the days when interaction was done on paper.
When drafting an email, I'm sure you've seen the CC: and BCC: fields. Have you ever been curious about what the CC and BCC fields mean?
What does CC and BCC mean in Email?
In an email, the CC field stands for Carbon Copy, whereas the BCC field stands for Blind Carbon Copy. Don’t worry if these terms don’t make sense in the context of an email. In this post, we’ll go through the context, why you need CC and BCC in email, and when you should utilize these fields.
You know, back in the day, the majority of communication was done on paper. If you needed to make a physical copy of a letter, you had to put carbon paper between two sheets of paper. This is what it would look like.
With this setup, everything you wrote or typed on the top sheet of paper would be imprinted onto the button piece of paper through the carbon paper.
The bottom sheet of paper would subsequently be referred to as the original's "Carbon Copy." As communication transitioned from paper to email over time, there was a requirement to send a "carbon copy" of an email to someone. That is how the CC field came to be.
What does CC mean in Email?
In fact, the CC field in an email allows the recipient to send a “carbon copy” of the email to someone other than the recipient listed in the email’s To: field. The CC area in email allows you to keep recipients informed.
Assume you are sending an email with a project quote to a prospective customer. You want to make a copy of your email and send it to your manager so that he is kept up to date. In this example, you’ll fill out the To: field with the potential client’s email address and the CC: field with your manager’s email address.
What does BCC mean?
BCC is an abbreviation for Blind Carbon Copy. BCC is used in the same way that CC is used in email to send a carbon copy of the email to someone.
However, unlike CC, there is a significant distinction in how BCC operates. When you CC an email to someone, the recipients in both the To and CC fields can see each other's email addresses.
The prospective customer may see that your boss has been CC'd on the email in the case above. To circumvent this, utilize the BCC box if you wish to keep the carbon copy recipients secret. All email addresses in the BCC area are kept concealed, so recipients in the TO and CC fields cannot see them.
