What is conjunction

Conjunctions are words that are used to join words, phrase clauses, and sentences together. Especially, conjunctions perform linking functions. examples are: and, or, but, either…….or, neither…….not, however, further more, etc.
They are of three basic types:
The coordinating conjunction: this class of conjunction specifically link words together through the following means:

Favor and Richard are brothers(Additive)
I want to see a Mary or her sister (Alternative)
To some, the changes will be painful, but only for a while(Adversative)
John and Mary are students
He tried his best but failed
I always take a book to read, yet I never seem to turn a single page.
I watch the ducks on the lake and the shirtless men playing soccer.




The subordinating conjunction: through this, an independent clause and dependent clause are linked together. Specifically, they introduced subordinate clauses and link them to the main clause to construct complex sentences. Unlike coordinating conjunctions, subordinate conjunctions can often come first in a sentence. This is because of the nature of the relationship between the dependent and the independent clause.
I work hard because of my children
He left the church before the money is worship
I do not know what your problem is
I must be at the meeting whenever it comes up
John ate food because she was hungry
When Mary returned from school, she washed her clothes.



Correlating conjunction: this form of conjunction comes in pairs. Some examples are: not, only……..but also, neither…...not either….or, both. They perform additive,constrastive, and alternative functions as well as Express zero choice of items in a clause. let us consider the following:
Students should not only read their books but also be morally upright (additive)
You will either go to the market or fetch water (alternative)
Neither Godwin nor her sister will attend the burial (Zero choices)
Either you or David is to blame
Noida Peter nor John was right.
