The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP (short for Grand Old Party), is one of the two major political parties in the United States, its historical rival, the Democratic Party being the other. The party is named after the republic, a major ideology of the American Revolution. Founded in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, economic modernists, former National Republicans, former Free Funds, and the Whites, the Republicans are largely nationalist and ruled most of the North American states between 1860 and 1932.
Originally, the GOP was subscribed with an ideological identity that was considered culturally liberal, anti-slavery and pro-economic reform. The party dominated the Democrats during the Third Party system and the Fourth Party system. In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt formed the Progressive ("Bull Moose") party after being rejected by the GOP and ran as a candidate. He called for many social reforms, some of which were later won by the New Deal Democrats in 1930. He lost the election, and when his supporters returned to the GOP, they were at odds with the new conservative economic position, which led them to leave for the Democratic Party and an ideological shift to the right of the Republican Party. At the national level, liberal New Deal Democrats dominate the Fifth Party system. The liberal Republican element was overwhelmed by the conservative wave that began in 1964 with Barry Goldwater and culminated in the Reagan era.
At present, their ideology is American conservatism, which contrasts with the liberal platform and progressive wing of the Democrats. The GOP's political platform supports low taxes, free market capitalism, free enterprise, a strong national defense, gun rights, regulation and restrictions on labor unions. In addition to advocating for conservative economic policies, the Republican Party seeks to support essentially traditional values based on socially conservative and Judeo-Christian morality. The GOP was firmly based in the industry northeast and Midwest until the 1930s, when it was firmly committed to protectionism and tariffs since its inception. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the core of the party changed, the southern states became more reliably republican in presidential politics, and the northeastern states became more reliably democratic. After the 1960s, Greeks became increasingly familiar with the Republican Party. Following Rao v. Wade against the 1973 Supreme Court ruling, the Republican Party formed an important part of the National Party's platform against abortion and increased its support among evangelical voters. In the early 1990's the main support of the party came mainly from the South, the Great Plains, the Mountain States and the northern countryside, but also from Orthodox Jews, Catholics, Mormons and Evangelicals.
The GOP won 28 of the last 40 presidential elections, with a total of 19 Republican presidents, the highest of any party. The first was 16th President Abraham Lincoln, who served as his assassin from 1861 to 1865; The most recent is 45th and current President Donald Trump, who was sworn in on January 20, 2017.
As of 2018, the Republican Party is the primary party in power in the United States, holding the presidency (Donald Trump), mainly in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, mostly the governing body and the state legislature (32/50, five others divided control). In addition, the GOP currently retains "trifectas" (both executive and legislative chambers) at the federal level in most states (25/50) and at a "tertiary plus" (executive, legislative, and judicial) federal level (as Republican presidents have nine Supreme Court justices. Employed).
