What is Ibuprofen?

#health Ibuprofen is considered a molecule that belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), that is, not cortisone derivatives. This group is characterized by its action focused on inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are substances responsible for the inflammatory response and pain. Therefore, ibuprofen, as an active ingredient, is mainly used as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic.

Since it has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, some experts prescribe it to treat pain when accompanied by inflammation, for example, muscle injuries, arthritis, menstrual pain, toothache or gum pain, angina, etc. It is also used to control fever in cases where acetaminophen is not enough.

By its mechanism of action, ibuprofen has a potentially gastrolesive effect, that is, it can damage the protective barrier of the stomach. In addition, it could have negative effects on the cardiovascular system. In the words of José Millán Oñate, president of the Colombian Association of Infectious Diseases, ibuprofen is a more potent analgesic and acetaminophen is more of an antipyretic. Excess doses can cause adverse effects, especially on the kidneys.

According to the pharmacist and president of the SEFAC Scientific Committee, Neus Caelles, explains, a dose of between 400 — 600 mg of ibuprofen is generally sufficient, although some doctors may increase the dose if they consider it necessary. Taking more than 1200 mg in 24 hours increases gastric mucosal damage and side effects.
