What Is Offset Printing
Overview
Offset Printing is a printing technique that involves the transferring of an image from a metal plate to a rubber blanket or rollers before being printing on the receiving media, usually paper. In this method the paper does not come in contact with the metal plates. Offset printing is also known as offset lithography. Offset printing helps in producing high-quality output on surfaces like cloth or wood. The rubber leaves a very fine print on rough surfaces, making the process more efficient. The process is equally important and workable for small, medium and large-scale production of printing due to its high quality, in expensiveness and consistent results. Offset printing was accidentally discovered by American printer Ira W. Rubel in 1904 and soon built a press to exploit. Offset printing is based on the principle that water and grease do not makes, so that a greasy can be deposited on grease-treated printing areas of the plate, while non printing areas, which holds water rejects the ink. The offset plate is usually of zinc or aluminum or a combination of metals, with the surface treated to render it porous and the coated with a photosensitive material. Offset printing process involves combining the characteristics of letterpress and offset.
