What is Oracle?

Oracle is a multinational American computer technology corporation headquartered in Austin, Texas. The company offers software related products and services worldwide. In the year 2020, it was globally ranked second largest software company in terms of revenue earned and market capitalization. Let us know more about Oracle.  

Oracle Corporation
Oracle Corporation is best known for the Oracle Database products they have developed. The corporation is considered the largest software company that has developed many products to market software applications for business.
Oracle is the most trusted and widely used database. Microsoft’s SQL server is the biggest rival of Oracle’s database.

Oracle History
Oracle was developed in August 1977 and founded by Lawrence Ellison (Larry Ellison) and some IT engineers Bob Miner, Ed Oates, and Bruce Scott. They first developed the project for the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). The project developed for CIA clients was named “Project Oracle”. The company that developed for these clients was called “Systems Development Labs”. They were then renamed Relational Software Inc. (RSI) in 1978 to expand their market. Again, they changed the name in 1982 to Oracle Systems Corporation.

What is Oracle database?
Oracle Database is a collection of structured data which is electronically stored in a device. It helps in accessing, managing, and finding relevant information. It is also called Oracle DB. It was developed by Lawrence Ellison and a group of engineers in 1977. They designed Oracle for enterprise grid computing and data warehousing. Enterprise grid computing uses SQL queries as a language and provides the most flexible and cost-effective way to manage information and applications.

Oracle is compatible with many platforms like Windows, Linux, UNIX, and macOS. Oracle database does support many operating systems.
According to priority, the Oracle database editions can be listed as follows:
●    Enterprise Edition: A robust and secure edition that offers all features including performance and security.
●    Standard Edition: Provides base functionality that does not require Enterprise Editions robust package.
●    Oracle Lite: Designed for mobile devices.
●    Personal Edition: It’s comparable to the Enterprise Edition without the Oracle Real Application Clusters feature.

Oracle Database is one of the oldest database management companies. It always focused on the enterprises’ needs and developed newest technologies to improve their business market on database use. It keeps coming with updated features for the existing products as well. For example, 19C is the most recently developed Oracle Database, and now it is available in the Oracle Cloud. With a cost-effective solution, Oracle has given access to users to select from various database editions to meet their specific needs.
