What is Pentecostal Sunday

Pentecostal Sunday, also known as Whitsunday, is observed on the Sunday following Easter's 50th day. As stated in Acts 2:1-31, the fifth book of the New Testament Bible, Pentecostal Sunday commemorates the appearance of the Holy Spirit to the disciples and other followers of Jesus Christ as flames. Since it falls on the 50th day of Easter, the word Pentecost is derived from the (Greek) term "pentekoste," which means "fiftieth." Pentecost can also refer to the full fifty days from Easter to Pentecost in Eastern Christianity; thus, the book collecting the liturgical passages is known as the "Pentecostarion." Pentecost is a "moveable feast" because its date is determined by Easter. In 2022 it falls on 5th June.

Significance of Pentecostal Sunday
As a significant Christian celebration, Pentecost Sunday marks the descending of the Holy Spirit on the followers and disciples following Jesus Christ's death and resurrection in Jerusalem for the Feast of Weeks, as recorded in Acts of the Apostles. The event brings the Easter cycle to a close, which began 90 days prior with Ash Wednesday at the start of Lent. Today, Pentecost Sunday is observed in many Christian denominations to commemorate the gift of the Holy Spirit, which recognizes that the believers contain God's very breath, and energy.

If you've heard of Pentecost, you're probably familiar with it as the day when God's Holy Spirit descended to indwell Jesus' followers. The church, God's "called-out ones," was established on this day. Acts chapter 2 contains the account. On that day, the Holy Spirit descended on the 120 disciples of Jesus, and they began speaking in tongues from all over the world. This caused such a stir that thousands of people in Jerusalem at the time came out to see what was going on, and Peter delivered the first gospel message in front of the multitude, and 'three thousand were added to their number that day (Acts 2:41). Since that Pentecost Sunday, the number of gospel followers has been steadily increasing.

It was 50 days after Jesus' resurrection when this happened. Jesus' followers grew convinced that Jesus had risen from the grave during this 'silent' period of 50 days. Many people wish they could go back to that Pentecost Sunday and have a similar experience of speaking in tongues and seeing miraculous signs of the Holy Spirit. People believe that because the early disciples of Jesus had this Pentecostal experience by "waiting for the gift of the Spirit," if we "wait," He will return in a similar manner. As a result, many individuals pray to God for a similar experience. To think this way, one must suppose that the Spirit of God was motivated by waiting and desire back then. The next Pentecostal Sunday falls on June 5th 2022.

Pentecost and Eastern Church
In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Pentecost is a Great Feast, a Solemnity in the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, a Festival in Lutheran Churches, and a Principal Feast in the Anglican Communion. For this holy occasion, many Christian faiths have a particular liturgy.
