What is SCP Foundation?

The Secure Contain and Protect (SCP) Foundation is a secret organization that contains anomalous or supernatural entities away from the public. The Foundation exists worldwide and in various languages, but they all share the same mantra.

“While the rest of mankind dwells in the light, we must stand in the darkness to fight it, contain it, and shield it from the eyes of the public so that others may live in a sane and normal world.

We secure. We contain. We protect.”

This excerpt from the SCP Foundation Handbook essentially introduces the world to SCPs through stories and science fiction.

So, what exactly is SCP Foundation?

The SCP Foundation is a fictional secret organization with a collaborative writing wiki project with the same name. The mandate of the Foundation, as written in the handbook, is to find, capture and contain paranormal and supernatural phenomena referred to as anomalies or SCPs. Concerning its function, SCP means to Secure, Contain and Protect.

The SCP Foundation is structured as a paramilitary intelligence agency entrusted by the world governments to capture and contain various unexplained happenings that defy the law of nature. These include creatures, objects, artifacts, locations, abstract concepts, unusual properties and entities that display supernatural powers.

When the Foundation discovers an SCP anomaly, they send a team of undercover agents known as Mobile Task Forces to collect and transport the anomaly to a Foundation facility for containment. If it’s not possible to transport it, the team contains the anomaly where it is and conceals all knowledge of it from the public.

Once contained and secure, the Foundation's scientists study and research anomalies to improve containment methods and keep the world safe. The anomalies are then classified depending on their difficulty to contain and how much danger they pose to the Foundation and the world. The object classes include safe, Euclid, Keter, Neutralized, Explained, Thaumiel, Hiemal, and Apollyon.

Structure of the SCP Foundation

Like any other institution, the SCP Foundation has ranks and structures to ensure the smooth running of the entity. Every member of the Foundation is sworn to secrecy and is expected to be loyal, professional, and non-judgemental.

The structure includes;

05-Council
This is the overseer council comprising 13 members who have unlimited access to all the Foundations files and reports. The council makes decisions on anomalies that pose an existential threat to humanity, but their power is infinite.

Ethics Committee
The ethics committee wields just as much power as the 05-council. Members of this committee hide in plain sight and decide what is ethically acceptable for the SCP Foundation.

Site Directors
The Foundation has various sites and areas across the globe where anomalies are contained. Site directors are in charge of these facilities, and they help carry out research.

Mobile Task Force
MFTs are the Foundations's skilled personnel made up of scientists, researchers, and Special Forces soldiers. They operate on the site or in the field and usually deal with the anomalies directly.

Other personnel members include researchers, containment specialists, security personnel, field agents, and recovery team.

SCP Wiki Project
While the SCP Foundation is a secret organization, the wiki is a community-based project where everyone can contribute. On the website, you will find stories and confidential reports on SCP objects and means of containing them. Recently, some of the Foundation's tales have been made into movies and games, thanks to their high-quality standard.
