What is the connection between eclecticism and writing?
When I was still working in construction, I sometimes imagined myself as a “language lump engineer” because language and technique are symbiotically present in me. That always results in one of two responses: confusion or surprise. I grab both to show what this looks like in my life. Using examples, as an illustrated story tells more than 1000 words.
In 1984, I wrote my work Amsterdam: from eclecticism to Herzberger by a photo assignment. From here some excerpts:
The artisanal starting point of Amsterdam School Architecture led the architects to make the masonry more complicated than usual.
One of these masonry expressions is the round corner solution that has been developed into a wavy whole. The plans are interesting for two reasons: this shows the size of the house and this shows that this house clearly follows the architect's whimsical wishes.
The rise of functionalism, after the momentary flourishing of the Amsterdam School, does not mean that this architectural style has now dissipated the image and life of the city where it is home. It continues to contribute to the differentiated character, colourness, plastic and viability of the urban organism. She continues to remind that without the artist's contribution, our built environment is poor, inadequate and inhumane.
Almost 40 years later, I still enjoy looking back at what I wrote, because that came from my heart. How cool is it that the skills and talents that naturally deserve you as a human being the easiest is lasting value to others.?
What you naturally do well and enjoy doing is the most valuable thing you can share with others.

However, the architects had little attention to the new possibilities, they continued to use dimensions, shapes and decorations of styles of the past: neoclassicism, neo-gothics, neo-renaissance and neo-baroque.. Sometimes elements from different styles are used interchangeably, which is called eclecticism.. In Antwerp and more specifically the Zurenborg area, there are beautiful buildings..
