What is the Nashville number system?
If you're an experienced musician, you're probably already familiar with the Nashville numbering system or at least heard of it. For those of who aren't familiar with it, it's certainly a useful system to know. The Nashville Number System (also called the numbering system) is a way to write the chords to a number in a “universal” or neutral key using numbers instead of chord names. This way, the song can be played in any key at any time without being rewritten.
How It Works
We start by taking the key in which the number is recorded and writing the scale. For example, if we use the key of D, we write a D-scale: DEF ♯ GABC ♯ D. Next, we give numbers to each of these notes: 12345671DEF ♯ GABC ♯ D. Now each of these songs will be a chord:
