What is the range in math

The range is the simplest measure of dispersion. It is the difference between the highest and the lowest scores in any given set of data. So considering our example above the range for test 1 is 95-40=55 while the range for test 2 is 80 - 55=25. This indicates that there are more chances of variability in test 1 than in test 2.
Again range does not consider other values or scores except the extreme scores (ie lowest and highest score)

This limitation makes the range not too useful except in factories where it is used in quality control. The range is easy to calculate and measure. The range generally gives you a good indicator of variability when you have a distribution without extreme values. The range is used in real life to make mathematical calculations. The range can be used to calculate the amount of time that has passed, like when calculating your age. The current year is 2021, and you were born in 1964. How old are you?

The formula to calculate the range is:
R=H - L

R = range
H = highest value
L = lowest value

The range is the easiest measure of variability to calculate. To find the range, follow these steps:

1. Order all values in your data set from low to high.
   Subtract the lowest value from the highest value.
2. Given the numerical values x1,x2, x3, then the range
   R=x(n)-x(1)
   i.e Range=highest value-lowest value

   Compute the range of the set 4,2,5,17,18,20,7,8,23
   Solution
   
   Range=R=(x(9)-x(1))
   =23-2
   =21
