We all know that 4K resolution has improved our watching experience, but what exactly is 4K? At least as per most TV makers, 4K resolution is usually 3840 x 2160 pixels (2160p). In comparison, Full HD 1080p picture is simply 1920 x 1080 pixels. A 4K screen has approximately 8 million pixels, that is almost four times the resolution of your existing 1080p television.
Consider your television as a grid with columns and rows. A full high Definition 1080p image is made up of 1080 rows and 1920 columns. A 4K image roughly doubles the values in both directions, producing four times the total amount of pixels. To put it differently, you could squeeze all of your 1080p pixels into a fraction of a 4K screen.
Why is it known as 4K?
The images are roughly 4,000 pixels wide, hence the name 4K. Before you question, yes, the 1080 resolution was named after the image height, but the 4K resolution was named after the image breadth. You may also hear this resolution referenced as 2160p for added fun.
Do those extra pixels make a difference?
That's when things start to get a little tangled. We are discussing about a resolution jump similar to the one from the SD (480 lines high) to the HD (1080 lines high). Furthermore, 4K displays are substantially sharper than 1080p displays.
However, if you keep your TV the same size and are utilized to sitting close together, you might not notice much of a change - particularly if you're still watching Hd videos rather than 4K footage.
How close do you need to sit to the 4K screen?
Remember how much of a fuss Apple made about the "retina" displays a few iPhones ago? "Retina" refers to screens with such resolution that individual pixels can't be seen at a normal viewing distance. If you stand far enough away from the 1080p TV, you'll notice that it's a retina display!
More significantly, your eyes won't be able to get any more details out of the 4K image than the 1080 image at the same distance. If you're already at "retina distance" from the 1080p TV and don't intend on moving the couch closer, upgrading to 4K might not make much of a difference.
Why you should care about the 4K Ultra HD?
There are several reasons why the 4K should make you reconsider your next television purchase (there are eleven in total, which you can read about here), but not all of them are immediately visible. Photographers who examine their work on the HD TV on a regular basis are only seeing a portion of the detail in their images when they see them at 2160p.
An Ultra HD monitor exposes a staggering amount of complexity and detail – the distinction can be mind-blowing. While 3D has proven to be a fad, 4K comes with no caveats. Its photographs with higher resolution are simply superior. Higher pixel density of the 4K panel also allows you to approach much closer without seeing the image's grid-like structure, allowing you to comfortably view a much bigger display from the very same seating posture as your existing Full HD panel.
What is 4K OLED?
Organic light-emitting diodes, or OLEDs, have been around for a while, but creating large screens with this technology has proven prohibitively expensive, preventing OLED tv from being a widespread option.
It's a shame since the OLED technology has the potential to be beautiful, with rich colors, deep blacks, as well as bright whites. But don't lose heart just yet. Several firms are working to introduce OLED to 4K televisions, the most renowned of which being LG. They're undeniably beautiful, but their prices have remained exorbitant even years after their introduction - and it's well acknowledged that they don't last as long as LCD panels. However, OLED TVs are becoming better year after year, with less chance of burn-in as well as a new 48-inch size aiming to make flagship OLED displays more accessible to typical budgets.
