Kentucky, officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is one of the 50 states of the United States of America. It is located in the east south-central region of the country, along the western side of the Appalachian Mountains, in an area known as the Upland Southern region.
Kentucky shares borders with the states of Virginia to the southeast and Tennessee to the southwest. The Ohio River runs through Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, forming a natural border between the three states. Located in the east, the Big Sandy and Tug Fork rivers define the state line with West Virginia, while the Mississippi River forms the border with Missouri in the west and southwest, respectively.
Native Americans have lived in the area for at least 5,000 years. Cherokee, Chickasaw, Delaware, and Shawnee were some of the Native American tribes known to have lived in Kentucky. These indigenous people transitioned from a hunter-gatherer society to an agricultural-based economy around 4,000 years ago, when they began cultivating a wide variety of wild plants.
The Kentucky State University
Daniel Boone, a frontiersman and one of the earliest folk heroes of the United States, set out to explore the region in the 18th century. According to historical records, the first settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains were established by settlers who had primarily come from Virginia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. The Treaty of Paris, which was signed in 1763, ceded to the British the territory now Kentucky (at the time, it was a part of Virginia). The territory was ceded to the United States by the British in 1783. Kentucky was admitted to the Union as the 15th state on June 1, 1792, along with Vermont, to the existing 13 states as part of the admission of Vermont.
Area
With a land area of 104,659 km2 (40,409 sq mi), [1] the Commonwealth of Kentucky is slightly larger than Iceland (103,000 km2) and slightly smaller than Guatemala (108,889 km2), respectively. Kentucky is nearly seven times the size of Texas, but it is nearly five times the size of New Jersey compared to the other states in the United States.
Rivers and Lakes
The Cumberland River, the Kentucky River, the Licking River, and the Green River are all major rivers in Kentucky. Lake Barkley, Lake Cumberland, and the Kentucky Lake freshwater reservoir, a major navigable dammed lake along the Tennessee River in Kentucky and Tennessee, are among the state's most notable water bodies.
Whiskey
Bourbon whiskey is a type of American whiskey aged in white oak barrels before being distilled, with the majority of the alcohol coming from corn. Bourbon can indeed be produced anywhere in the United States; however, it has strong ties to the American South, and particularly to Kentucky. According to the Kentucky Distillers ' Association, it is estimated that Kentucky produces 95 percent of all bourbon whiskey consumed worldwide.
UNESCO has listed one Kentucky site as a world heritage site
Stalactites and stalagmites can be found in Mammoth Cave, located within Kentucky's Mammoth Cave National Park. It is the world's longest known cave system, consisting of chambers and underground passageways, with a total length of more than 600 km (400 mi). It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects the Mammoth Cave National Park.
In Kentucky, there is a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site
Located in south-central Kentucky, Mammoth Cave National Park protects a portion of the Green River valley and hilly country, as well as the Mammoth Cave Cave System, which is the world's longest known cave system. This incredible underground network of natural caves, vertical shafts, and extremely large horizontal underground passageways spans more than 650 kilometers and is the longest network of its kind on the planet (405 mi).
In addition to being an unrivaled example of several stages in Earth's evolutionary history, the limestone cave system contains almost every type of cave formation known to man, as well as the most abundant cave-dwelling wildlife known to science.
