We all know that if the Earth did not rotate on its axis, there would be no sunset. I don't think there are many more things fixed in life as much as sunrise and sunset. So why not find out when your sunset will be and where!
The sunset is the moment when the last rays of sunlight disappear beyond the horizon. Sunset time is sunset time all over the world. But the official definition of sunset is when the sun disappears beneath the horizon. So, what time is sunset? It depends on where you are in the world. Use sites to find out what time the sunset is in your location.
There are online tools that will show you the exact time of sunset, sunrise, and twilight at any location, which are accurate to 15 minutes for sunset, sunrise times, and twilight duration. Just choose a location from the drop-down menus below to see the sun rise, set, and twilight.
When we talk about sunset, there are interesting questions, and facts that come to mind are following:
How long does the sun take to set off?
Sunset went through three stages, and finally, it goes dark, which are civil twilight, nautical twilight, and astronomical twilight...
Civil twilight:
is the period after sunset and before sunrise during which it is possible to carry out outdoor activities without artificial lighting. During this time, the sky will still appear to have a blue tinge, and objects visible will have indistinct edges.
The next stage, nautical twilight, begins when the sun's geometric center is 6° below the horizon. At the beginning of nautical twilight, objects are distinguishable; however, they become indistinct as the last vestiges of twilight fade away. The horizon at this point is clearly defined.
The final step in the sunset is called astronomical twilight. This stage occurs when the sun reaches an elevation of -12°. At this point, only the brightest stars are visible under ideal conditions. Theoretically, at this point, one can see all of the stars/planets in Earth's sky if they were not obscured by clouds or light pollution (this depends on atmospheric conditions).
Why do sunsets disappear soon?
If you've ever gazed upon the sun setting over the ocean, you may have noticed that it vanishes very quickly after it touches the horizon. The reason for this is geo sync. Simply put, an equinox is basically when there's an instantaneous line of sight due to the position of the Earth (and us) concerning the sun.
If you live in the northern hemisphere, the equinox means that for about 12 hours each day, there is virtually no appreciable change in light. This is because the sun rises almost due east and sets almost due west. But within the next 6 hours after sunset, there is a sharp decrease in daylight. That's when the sun reaches its lowest angle to the horizon at sunset and when the sun has sunk so much below the horizon relative to your location that it barely illuminates things at noon.
When was the sunset latest?
During winter, the longest (and earliest) civil (not Nautical) twilight happens at the December solstice when the sun is farthest to the south. Then, when the sun is at its most significant distance from us in June, it produces the shortest (and earliest) civil and nautical twilight lengths.
Because we're talking about summer and winter in this paragraph, we can exclude the equinoxes for simplicity. When we do that, we'll see there are times when solar days exceed 24 hours during both summer and winter. These happen during both June and December — shorter nights in June; longer nights in December.
