During June, the Sun rises at the North Pole at 5:23 and sets at 21:03 hours. In December, on the other hand, it rises at 9:38 and sets at 15:34; for twenty-four hours around the summer solstice (June 20), and for thirty-two hours around the winter solstice (December 22).
A pole is located at 90 degrees from the subsolar point; on Earth, therefore, one pole is in the quarter of the globe opposite to that where we live. As we approach that pole, we find that sunrise and sunset occur progressively later in the day, but not because of any motion of Earth or Sun.
Why is the sunset so beautiful?
Sunset is a beautiful phenomenon that can be enjoyed by anyone who takes a moment to pause and enjoy it. But why do sunsets have such a mesmerizing effect on so many people?
- The reason is not so much the sunset itself but rather what it does for the clouds. The setting sun causes the rays of light to bend as they pass through the Earth's atmosphere, causing the light to scatter. This scattering makes the sky appear red and orange.
- The lower-level clouds are often white or gray, and this color will reflect light from other sources. However, when that light comes from a scattering of sunlight, these other colors are filtered out, and only the reds and oranges remain.
- Sometimes the clouds in the upper level will catch this light as well, resulting in even more dramatic colors. You can see this particularly well on an overcast day when there isn't much natural light available.
Stages of sunset
As the name suggests, sunset is the phenomenon that happens every day as the Sun slowly sinks below the horizon. This event is caused by the rotation of earth on its axis, which makes it seem like the Sun is sinking into the sea.
Sunset is marked by different stages.
Civil Twilight:
First, there's civil twilight, where there's enough natural light that you can still see your way around outside. Civil sunset marks the moment when the Sun appears to sink below the horizon in a clear sky, and there is no sunlight to be directly reflected from the sky, and it marks a similar state when the Sun is below the horizon, but there is light from the sky above.
Nautical Twilight:
The next stage is nautical twilight, which occurs when there's enough light for sailors to navigate ship routes without artificial light. Nautical twilight is a period in a day when the Sun is below the horizon, but there is still enough light from the Sun that objects on land can be distinguished from those at sea.
They are caused by gravitational forces exerted by the moon and Earth upon each other. During a lunar or solar eclipse, these gravitational forces are temporarily reduced because of the alignment of one body in front of another. This causes a sloshing effect in water
bodies on Earth.
