The Eastern Time Zone is a zone of the UTC time zone with an UTC−05:00 offset. It is used in the United States and Canada. In the United States, it is commonly called Eastern Standard Time (EST) when standard time is being observed (winter), and Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) when daylight saving time is being observed (spring to autumn).
In Canada, the terms Eastern Standard Time (EST) and Central Standard Time (CST) are used in Ontario, with the same meanings as in the United States. In Mexico, Central Daylight Time (CDT) is used. The Caribbean uses the term Atlantic Standard Time (AST)."
Eastern Time Zone boundaries:
The Eastern Time Zone is not a time zone in which all places observe daylight saving time (see usage below). It is only used in some parts of the Caribbean which use eastern Standard Time year-round. UTC-5 (Eastern Standard Time) is often used as a de facto name for UTC-5 time, and for most of Alaska's Aleutian Islands.
In terms of broadcast television, primetime in this zone runs from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Eastern and Pacific both maintain separate programming schedules. For other purposes, daylight saving time is considered to end at 2 a.m. local time on the first Sunday in November; thus, Central Standard Time (CST) is used during that period."
Countries In Easter Time Zone:
The Eastern Time Zone is a time zone in parts of Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, part of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, and part of the Atlantic Ocean. Places that use Eastern Standard Time (EST) when observing standard time (autumn/winter) are 5 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC−05:00). Places that use Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) when observing daylight saving time (spring/summer) are 4 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC−04:00).
EDT EST:
The EDT time zone does not use daylight saving time (DST). Thus, it is one hour behind the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) time zone even during standard time. The standardizing of time in North America by using daylight saving time began on 1 April 1912, when most of the United States adopted it. By adopting it as a national policy this was meant to help conserve fuel for more important uses in war-time.[3] DST was applied from 1918 to 1945. Most broadcast and chartered flights now operate on Eastern Time
Daylight Saving Time:
Daylight saving time (DST) is an annual event in which clocks are turned forward one hour to prolong the day and give people more light to work, read, and play.
The United States is currently the only country to use daylight saving time year-round. The practice was first introduced by the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which specified that daylight saving time would run from the last Sunday of April until the last Sunday in October.
In 1987 Congress passed a second act that made the first Sunday in March, rather than the last Sunday in February, the beginning of daylight saving time.
