Central Standard Time (CST) is a time zone in North America, used in Mexico and the western United States. It is 6 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
During the winter, Central Standard Time is UTC−6:00. During the summer Central Daylight Time (CDT) is UTC−5:00. In the IANA time zone database the standard time is denoted by America/Chicago.
Central Standard Time is now normally called "America/Chicago" in software, because use of "Central Daylight Time" would be ambiguous due to its potential confusion with the time in other parts of North America that are on Daylight Saving Time. The abbreviation "CST" is ambiguous as well, but the ambiguity has not caused any problems and is unlikely to do so.
Central Time Zone Inside The United States:
Inside the United States, Central Standard Time is generally considered to be the westernmost time zone in the contiguous United States. However, this definition has not been officially adopted by the U.S. government and is based on standard time in a majority of states before the adoption of four standard time zones for the continental United States.
Central Daylight Time Zone:
Central Daylight Time (CDT) is a time zone with a UTC−05:00 hour offset. It is used in the U.S. states of North Dakota and parts of Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota. The zone includes the following areas: all of South Dakota, nearly all of North Dakota except for a small portion in the southeast corner of the state, all but the easternmost portion of Montana, a small part of northeast Wyoming, a small part of east-central Nebraska, and a small part of extreme western Iowa.
The current area using Central Daylight Time is bordered by the Mountain Time Zone to the west (UTC−07/−06), this time zone (UTC−05) to the east, and the Pacific Time Zone to the northwest (UTC−08/−07).
The name "Central Daylight Time" is also used as a synonym for the Central Time Zone, although this usage is less common and not permitted by the standard zones of use/awards in documentation put out by the U.S. Government Printing Office or National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
CST Time Zone:
CST is a time zone that runs primarily through the states of Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. It was formally established in the year 1883 and later adopted by the U.S. to help standardize timekeeping in North America.
Although the Central Time Zone is not as well-known as its counterparts, it is important to note that this time zone separates itself from other areas observing CST in that it uses daylight saving time during its summer months while most of the others do not observe DST at all.
GMT Central Time Zone:
The Central Time zone is an area 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-6) during the winter months (referred to as Central Standard Time or CST) and 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-5) during the summer months (referred to as Central Daylight Time or CDT).
