Nevada is known for its desert landscape covered with some of the most impressive geological features in the country. The state features a number of large lakes, such as Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, and Walker Lake, as well as two of the largest rivers in the country, the Colorado River and the Rio Grande.
The name Nevada was given to the Sierras that cross the state by Father Francisco Garces when he explored parts of it in 1776, and originally applied only to that region. More recently, the state is also known as a major gambling destination after becoming legalized in 1931.
Etymology:
The Nevada Territory was named after the Sierra Nevada mountains, which had been named after the Spanish word for snow-covered peaks in the Dominguez–Escalante expedition of 1776. The word is an old name; neve is an archaic English word for snow, as is nieve.
The adjective "nevada" comes from the Spanish word "nevado", meaning "covered with snow". The current spelling of the word ("snowy") is derived from the Old Spanish nevada, with the final "d" being dropped at some point in the 18th century and a plural affix "-s" being added.
Population:
Nevada is a state in the Western, Mountain West, and Southwestern regions of the United States of America. Nevada is the 7th most extensive, the 34th most populous, but the 9th least densely populated of the 50 United States. Nearly three-quarters of Nevada's people live in Clark County, which contains the Las Vegas–Paradise metropolitan area where three of the state's four largest incorporated cities are located. Nevada's capital is Carson City.
Geography:
Nevada is almost entirely within the Basin and Range Province, and is broken up by many north-south mountain ranges. Most of these ranges have endorheic valleys between them, which belies the image portrayed by the term Great Basin. The most notable exception to this rule is to be found in the southern portion of the state. The Las Vegas Valley lies within the Mojave Desert, and receives over 2 million visitors each year. The other major exception is the Lake Tahoe area, located approximately two hours northeast of Las Vegas on Interstate 80.
Time Zone:
The time zone boundaries are a little more complicated than the map implies. Almost all of Nevada is in the Pacific Time Zone (UTC -8), with the exception of West Wendover, which will be listed on many online resources as being in Mountain Time (UTC -7). But that's a mistake; West Wendover doesn't observe Mountain Time or Pacific Time — it observes its own unique time zone, known as "Mountain Standard Time" (MST), which is UTC -7.
The same goes for Hopi Nation and Navajo Nation — they're in Arizona, but they observe MST. The town of Lovelock also observes MST, despite being located within the borders of Nevada.
Mountain Time Zone:
The only two parts of Nevada that do observe Mountain Time are tiny slivers of land just north of Lake Tahoe, at the border with California. Markleeville is the exception to this rule, observing Pacific Time like almost the rest of Nevada.
The rest of Idaho observes Pacific Time except for one small portion west of Boise that observes Mountain Time. Utah also has a small area near Lake Powell that observes Mountain Time (the rest of Utah observes Mountain Standard Time).
