New Mexico, officially the State of New Mexico, is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States of America. It is one of the Mountain States and shares the Four Corners with Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and California. New Mexico is also known as the "Land of Enchantment" due to its large number of Native American tribes and places of enchantment. The capital is Santa Fe; however, its largest city is Albuquerque.
Etymology:
New Mexico's name has three parts: "New," to acknowledge the fact that it is the newest of the 48 contiguous states; "Mexico," in recognition of the fact that it was Mexican territory until 1848; and Land of Enchantment, a translation of the original Spanish name, "Nuevo México." This history is reflected in the state flag. If you look at the flag carefully, you can see that it bears an image of an elephant and cactus, representing New Spain (in which Mexico was included) and the Spanish explorers who first came to this area. You'll also see representations of mountains and red bars on a yellow background, representing New Mexico's sunrises and sunsets. These are said to be the most beautiful in North America.
Geography:
New Mexico's eastern border lies along 103°W longitude with the state of Oklahoma, and 2.2 miles (3.5 kilometres) west of 103°W longitude with Texas (due to a 19th-century surveying error). New Mexico thus shares an international border with the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south and west. The southern border is defined by the US-Mexican border.
Time zone of New Mexico:
The majority of New Mexico lies in the Mountain Time Zone with daylight saving time (DST) being observed. The exceptions to this rule are the counties of Sandoval, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Taos which fall within the Central Time Zone. This means that most places in New Mexico observe DST with an offset of UTC-6:00 while those counties without DST remain on UTC-7:00 all year round.
US Mountain Standard Time (MST) is a time zone in the Mountain Time Zone in the United States. US Mountain Standard Time is 7 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-7). US Mountain Standard Time starts at 2 am on the first Sunday in November and ends at 2 am on the last Sunday in March, when it changes to US Mountain Daylight Time (MDT).
Current Time In New Mexico:
New Mexico is a state with no official time zone, but it observes Mountain Time.
The state is divided into three time zones. Mountain Time (MT) covers the eastern three-fourths of the state, Central Time (CT) covers the western fourth and the Zona del Norte (ZN) - or 'Northern Zone' - includes everything in between."
