Pacific time zone
The Pacific Time Zone follows standard time by subtracting eight hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC8). During daylight saving time offset is UTC7, and it is based on the mean solar time of the 105th meridian west of Greenwich Observatory.
This time zone is known as the Pacific Time Zone in the United States and Canada (PT). When observing standard time (late fall to early spring), it utilizes Pacific Standard Time (PST), and when observing daylight saving time (PDT), it uses Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) (early spring to late autumn).
The vast majority of Canada observes daylight saving time. The Northwest Zone, which is aligned with the US PDT daylight saving schedule, is the name given to the UTC8 time zone in Mexico.
Los Angeles is the largest city in the Pacific Time Zone, with the greatest metropolitan area in the zone.
The time zone difference is two hours. One hour ahead of Alaska Time, one hour ahead of Mountain Time, two hours behind Central Time, and three hours behind Eastern Time.
The Pacific Time Zone encompasses the following states or regions:
• California
• Washington
• Oregon - Except for Malheur County, it's on the Idaho border
• Nevada
• Idaho Panhandle — the northern portion of Idaho.
Hyder, Alaska is officially part of the Alaska Time Zone. However, due to significant ties to nearby Stewart, British Columbia, which is in the Pacific Time Zone, the majority of the community observes Pacific Time. The United States Post Office in Hyder operates on Alaska Standard Time.
Most of British Columbia (accept the Highway 95 corridor and areas around Tumbler Ridge, Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Golden, and Creston), all of Yukon, and the townsite of Tungsten in the United States are all part of the Pacific Time Zone (NWT).
The state of Baja California in Mexico is entirely in the Pacific Time Zone. The state of Baja California Sur, which is located south of Baja California, is not included.
Daylight time
Throughout 2006, the local time (PST, UTC8) switched to daylight time (PDT, UTC7) on the first Sunday in April, changing from 02:00 LST to 03:00 LDT (local daylight time), and then returning to 02:00 LDT to 01:00 LST on the final Sunday in October.
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 causes the United States local time to move from PST to PDT on the second Sunday in March, from 02:00 LST to 03:00 LDT, and then back again on the first Sunday in November, from 02:00 LDT to 01:00 LST.
These dates were implemented by the Canadian provinces and territories that use daylight time between October 2005 and February 2007. Beginning in 2010, the section of Mexico in this time zone, as well as several other portions of the country, began using the extended dates. The vast majority of Mexicans, on the other hand, continue to utilize the old dates.
Pacific Time: PST and PDT
When Daylight Saving (Savings) Time or DST is in use, the clocks are on Pacific Daylight Time, abbreviated as PDT, which is 7 hours behind GMT: GMT-7
When DST is not in use, the clocks are on Pacific Standard Time, abbreviated as PST, 8 hours behind GMT: GMT-8
The term Pacific Time (PT) is often used to denote the local time in areas observing either Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) or Pacific Standard Time (PST).
In other words, in locations observing Daylight Saving Time (DST) during part of the year, Pacific Time is not static but switches between PDT and PST.
