When Georgia had two time zones
This is a bit of a history lesson about the two time zones of Georgia. There are lots of interesting things to that most people are just simply not aware of.Â
I recently came across two maps of Georgia that surprised me since they showed Georgia divided into Eastern and Central time zones. The Hapeville Depot Museum and Visitor Center in Hapeville has one map, and the Atlanta Constitution published the other in 1931. Atlanta was located in the Central time zone. The Standard Time Zone Act of 1918 was the first step toward making time zones official across the United States. Georgia is divided between the Eastern and Central time zones, with roughly one-third of the state falling under the Central Time Zone. Georgia railroads and industries were thrown into disarray as a result of this.
