When Georgia had two time zones

This is a bit of a history lesson about the two time zones of Georgia. There are lots of interesting things to that most people are just simply not aware of.

I recently came across two maps of Georgia that surprised me since they showed Georgia divided into Eastern and Central time zones. The Hapeville Depot Museum and Visitor Center in Hapeville has one map, and the Atlanta Constitution published the other in 1931. Atlanta was located in the Central time zone.

The Standard Time Zone Act of 1918 was the first step toward making time zones official across the United States. Georgia is divided between the Eastern and Central time zones, with roughly one-third of the state falling under the Central Time Zone. Georgia railroads and industries were thrown into disarray as a result of this.

On Nov. 23, 1918, members of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce convened to debate whether Atlanta should remain in the Central time zone or move totally to the Eastern Time zone. The Atlanta History Center has notes from the meeting in its files. Morris Rich, B. Davison, H.P. Hermance, Samuel C. Dobbs, Ivan Allen, and D.H. Strauss were among those in attendance.

The two time zones were contested and discussed until 1941 when Gov. Eugene Talmadge advocated for the Eastern Time Zone to be implemented throughout Georgia. The idea was met with opposition from the Interstate Commerce Commission, which regulates transportation companies at 11:35 a.m.

Railways, airlines, and bus companies continued to operate using two time zones while waiting for authorization from the Interstate Commerce Commission. In June 1941, the Interstate Commerce Division and the state agreed that all railroads would run on Eastern Time.

After Talmadge signed the law, merchants and banks reset their clocks the next morning. "It's the same time all over Georgia now," the Atlanta Constitution said.
