#health Fever is a very common symptom in the first years of life. Children start school and, especially during winter, have many infections. “They take everything”, so they often have a fever to defend themselves.
It should be borne in mind that fever is a mechanism that the body has to fight against the attack caused by the infection. Fever is the body's reaction, not the disease.
The increase in temperature facilitates the action of the body's defenses against bacteria and viruses that cause infections. Therefore, it is not necessary to treat the fever and try to lower it to the usual temperature. On the other hand, it is advisable to relieve the discomfort that fever may cause to the child.
When faced with a child with a fever, the most important thing is to know what is the cause and watch for those symptoms that indicate problems and the advisability of consulting the pediatrician.
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are commonly used to reduce fever and relieve discomfort in children. Both can be given in drops or in syrup, and paracetamol also in suppositories (although the oral route is always preferable).
It should be borne in mind that:
- If the child is not affected, we do not gain anything by treating the fever.
- Anti-thermal agents can lower the temperature between 1 and 15 degrees (ºC).
- The goal is not to reach normal body temperature.
- Ibuprofen can be used from three to four months of age.
- Do not give acetaminophen to a child younger than 3 months without being checked by the doctor.
- It is not recommended to use antithermic drugs to prevent a possible reaction to vaccines.
- Paracetamol can be given every 4 or 6 hours, and ibuprofen every 6 or 8 hours. Always consult the appropriate doses according to the child's weight.
- It is essential to keep them out of reach of children, since taking a high dose causes toxicity.

My little boy had a high fever at night. We decided to put him in a cold water bath to lower the fever. This was successful, but afterwards we learned that we should have lowered the temperature of the water systematically, rather than suddenly.
