Becoming a mother is a gift from God. Women, well not all but many of them long to get pregnant and have a child of their own. Pregnancy is a precious time but delivery can be quite difficult for most women. In earlier days it was very common to have a baby through the natural process but now a day’s Cesarean is quite common. You will find most women going through the C-section usually due to a bad lifestyle, unable to bear the pain, or due to medical complications. If you have been advised by a doctor to have a C section then it is important to know what to watch out for after the operation. Remember not to be scared, if you keep an eye on some symptoms you will know when to be concerned. Most women do not get serious issues after the C section but it is better safe to be sorry, right?
Here are a few things you need to watch out for after a C section
High or Persistent Fever
It is ok to have a slight fever after a cesarean but if the temperature goes over 100 degrees Fahrenheit or stays for more than 24 hours then it could be a sign of an infection. It could be a bacterial infection at the incision site which should be looked at by the doctor immediately. Women, who are obese, have diabetes, or have taken steroid medication for a long time is at more risk of infections than others. Women who went through prolonged labor or had excessive blood loss during the delivery can also get an infection.
Abnormal Wound Drainage
Having a C section is quite common but it is not minor surgery. Although the stitches heal in a week or so, you can expect drainage at the incision site. If you see excessive or discolored discharge oozing out of the incision site then you need to call your doctor immediately. Keep an eye on the incision site and see if it is red, swollen, or tender to touch, or if you see pus filling in then call your doctor and inform him. This infection can spread to your uterus, ovaries, and nearby organs.
Persistent Pain
It is ok to have some pain after the C section at the site but it is usually treated with painkillers. If you still feel severe pain and if it worsens then you need to talk to your doctor about it. Usually, the doctor will ask you to stay for at least three days in the hospital after the operation. When you return home you should remember to contact your doctor if the pain is persistent or is getting worse.
If it is hard to breath
You might feel uncomfortable while inhaling or exhaling after the surgery but if you are having trouble breathing or if it gets worse then it is time to contact your doctor. Most women feel this issue after the surgery due to the anesthesia, it can also lead to the buildup of mucus in the lungs but it can also lead to atelectasis when a part of the lung collapses. You might feel it harder to breathe and feel your heartbeat increasing, you might also see a tinge of blue on your skin or lip due to lack of oxygen in your body. Call your doctor if you see these signs when you are back at home.
Excessive Vaginal Bleeding
Bleeding is as common after a cesarean section as it is following vaginal birth. This is due to the normal shedding of the placenta following delivery. In most cases, the bleeding will gradually subside. If it continues or gets worse then it could be a medical emergency. Call the nearest doctor immediately if you see excessive vaginal bleeding. You can figure out if it is excessive bleeding when your pad is soaked in 15 minutes.
Enjoy your baby, spend time with him and feed him properly but do keep an eye on the warning signs to stay away from serious medical issues after a C section.
