If you are fond of places with rich, authentic, and cultural backgrounds then you need to visit Jamaica. Jamaica is one of the most visited places around the globe. It offers you great places to see, excellent scenic views, delicious food, and a rich culture that will remain with you for a very long time. But, like other places, Jamaica has its dos and don’ts. It is always better to know about the things you should watch out for when traveling to a new destination. Jamaica is known for being a beautiful place but people have shared some incidents that were not so pleasant. Here are a few things for you to avoid getting stuck in sticky situations while visiting Jamaica.
1. Avoid getting into a taxi without a red number plate
You might find very friendly people while you travel but remember they still are strangers that you don’t know much about. If you want to move around in or out of Jamaica, do not get into a car with a stranger. Take a cab with a red plate or better take public transport. Red plate cabs are licensed and are insured, unlike White plate cabs. Make travel arrangements before moving to your next destination. Learn to say no when your gut tells you.
2. This might come as weird to you but wearing camouflage clothing or having them in your bags is illegal in Jamaica. The local army in Jamaica is permitted to wear it so be wary.
3. Leave your flashy jewelry and expensive bags at home. Jamaica is a place where you would want to lay low. Also do not share your personal information like where you live, how much money you make, what car you drive, etc. You don’t want people scamming or robbing you while you are on a vacation.
4. It is fun to find adventure while visiting places but don’t do that in Jamaica. Move around in highly populated areas. If you plan to trek or backpacking then do it with an experienced guide. It is not advisable to venture alone if you want to stay safe.
5. You already know this, but still, do not hitchhike and do not travel at night. Make sure you have a ride ready before you move out, especially at night. Never agree on a friendly ride, usually, it is not safe. If you want to visit a beach at night, don’t. You can enjoy the resort beach that’s about it. These private beaches are closed for the public and are guarded 24 hours by private security so you’ll be safe there.
6. Remember to drive on the left side of the road. Renting a car and driving around is fun but stay on your left. Don’t expect to find nice, smooth roads. You will find some potholes in some areas so drive carefully.
7. A little booze or a high won’t harm anyone especially if you are out having fun with friends but remember marijuana is illegal in Jamaica. You can get arrested for having marijuana on you. If someone offers you weed, say no politely and walk away.
8. Stay away from nonlocal seafood. Jamaica has excellent fresh seafood which might tempt you to try everything on the menu. Try to eat locally available seafood if you want to eat fresh and stay within your budget. If you like lobster, don’t eat it between July through March because they won’t be fresh for sure. Catching Lobsters in these months is illegal in Jamaica.
9. Try eating at the roadside jerk shacks. They might not look very attractive but they serve good, affordable food. You might find some great deals not to mention meeting a lot of new people from around the world.
10. Jamaica is a laid-back destination. People are never in hurry there so if you are a stickler for the time you won’t be very happy. The best way to stay happy is to schedule activities in advance and be relaxed. Know that nothing starts on time here.
