What to watch out for when buying a used car

Buying your first car is a thrill some might buy brand new ones and others might go for pre-owned cars. People usually buy used cars to brush up on their driving skills before they invest in a new one, and some buy them due to budget constraints. Whatever your reasons might be, here are some things you need to watch out for before buying a used car from an individual seller, a broker, or from a company.

Check the Car’s Condition:
Once you have decided on the car, it is time to check some minor details. If you know the technical aspects of the car yourself then you can examine it yourself or you can call an expert to look into it. A car might look good from the inside but may have issues on the inside. An expert will be able to point out any issues regarding the body and the engine and tell you the price it should be bought for.

Check the upholstery in the car, also check for any tears or stains on the front and back of the seats. You should also look at the music system; monitor etc to see if it works properly.

Check the car from all angles. Watch out for rusting and paint damage.
Make sure that the car is well balanced and aligned. Take a look near the undercarriage for any loose parts.

Checking the tires is very important. Look for wear and tear and its alignment so that it does not drift in one direction while driving.

Don’t forget to check the engine, that is the heart of the car. Check for leaks, corrosion, and cracked tubes. Also, look at the oil and transmission fluid using a dipstick.

Another thing to look at is the mileage. Ask the seller about the mileage in detail to avoid further complications.

Never buy a car without test driving it. Drive it on a highway, in narrow streets, and check the breaks. It will help you determine if the car is safe to buy or not.

Always check the maintenance records. Some people have all the service records of the car. Ask for the papers and go through them thoroughly before purchasing them.

Verify the authenticity of the vehicle’s registration certificate. It will have the owner’s name and the car’s details – engine number, chassis number, etc. The certificate should be original. If it is a duplicate one, it will be marked as DRC. In that case, speak to the seller about the DRC status and check, in which state was the car registered

The seller should have documents like original papers, insurance, road tax receipt, pollution certificate, etc. If the car was bought on EMI by the seller then they should have the financing company’s NOC for sure.

Before buying the car the old insurance should be transferred to your name and it is mainly the buyers’ responsibility to get that done.

You can buy a new policy for the car after your buy it as without it driving is illegal.

Buying a used car is a good option and it saves a lot of money as long as you keep these points in mind.
