Generation X refers to the generation of Americans born between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s, and is sometimes abbreviated as Gen X. The years that make up Gen X aren't all the same. Some experts, such as demographers William Straus and Neil Howe, locate the birth years between 1961 and 1981, whereas Gallup places them between 1965 and 1979. However, everyone agrees that Generation X comes after the baby boomers and before Generation Y, or the millennials.
