The bird is 15 to 165 cm long. The bird is difficult to distinguish from a common wheatear in its first winter rug. Male and female hardly differ. The plumage is predominantly sandy. The rump is white and the tail has a black T-shaped drawing. Characteristic differences are: yellow-brown rather than ruddy ear region, a black speck (the thumb wing) on the wing arch, a wider black end edge on the tail and a striking, upright position while standing still while foraging on the ground.
