The incident on March 5 was framed as a war for American independence by Samuel Adams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Sam Adams projected the deceased roiters as martyrs of liberty and a negative publicity of British which resulted in widespread rage against British rule in its colonies.  

Legislation that produced income by imposing charges was the climax of rising instability in Boston, which had been sparked by colonists' opposition to a succession of British Parliament actions. The Townshend Acts, introduced by the British Parliament in 1767, were intended to exercise power over the colonies. One of the measures imposed tariffs on a variety of items lead, glass, paper, paint, and tea which was especially controversial in Massachusetts. Tensions started to rise, and a patriot crowd assaulted eight British soldiers in the streets of the city on March 5, 1770, killing a youngster when he shot a rifle at them.

In reaction to the mob's taunts and threats, the troops fired their small arms. They killed five colonists. Brawls between colonists and British soldiers continued over the next few days, resulting in the Boston Massacre. The event and the trials of the British troops, none of whom were convicted and sentenced, were extensively reported and aroused widespread criticism. The events contributed to the British regime's unpopularity throughout most of colonial North America, paving the way for the American Revolution. Crispus Attucks, the victim of the Boston Massacre whose name became well-known, was hailed as the first hero of the American Revolution.
