The beautiful, eye-catching vibrant flowers, Crepe/Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia) belongs to the Lythraceae family, sometimes known as the Loostrife family. It is a genus comprising more than 50 annual leave shedding trees and shrubs native to Southeast Asia, India, northern Australia, and various parts of Oceania. It has been cultivated in warmer climates all over the world. These colourful flowering trees are commonly used as ornamentals in both domestic and commercial settings.
Features of Crepe Myrtle
Crepe myrtles are well renowned for their wide range of colours, which include deep purple, red, white and many more. The fruit is a capsule that starts off green and juicy before turning a deep brown or black colour as it matures. There are six or seven lines of division, which produce spikes similar to those of the calyx, and many little, winged seeds are released. Sinewy, fluted, mottled stems and branches are common features of Lagerstroemia species, which have bark that loses throughout the year. While all species are woody in nature, they can range in height from 30cm- 300cm or more.
Planting Crepe Myrtle
There are some basic factors that are important for the better development of your beloved Crepe Myrtle. Therefore, I have mentioned a few planting tips that may help you to keep your flowers healthy and long-lasting:
• Location: Crepe myrtles are a good choice for the main entrance and pathways. Moreover, these plants have a reputation for being messy, and their seedpods can darken concrete, so they should be kept away from pools, decks, and walkways.
• Climate: Both subtropical and tropical species are prevalent in home and commercial landscapes in their respective climates.
• Time: Spring is the ideal time for planting Crepe myrtles, as in order to produce summer flowers, these plants require new growth each spring.
• Watering: Before planting your crepe myrtle, make sure it is well watered. This will assist it in absorbing water after planting. Mulch to keep weeds at bay and maintain moisture.
• Fertilization: For Crepe Myrtle, low to moderate fertilising is sufficient. However, you may need to do spread fertilizer more often during rainy seasons.
• Lightning: Crepe myrtles require eight hours of direct sunlight per day to blossom properly.
• Blooming: Most years, crepe myrtles start blooming between May-June.
Depending on the variety, blooming continues for 3-4 months. Some plants flower slowly than others. The hybrid variants usually flower first. The easiest-flowering kinds include Natchez, Tuscarora, Basham's Party Pink, and Muskogee. Tonto, Acoma, and Sioux are semi-dwarf types that arrive a week or two later.
• Pruning: Crepe myrtles will set seeds once they have blossomed and shed their first blossoms. The limbs slump due to the weight of the little round seedpods or capsules. Cut the seedpods off using a sharp set of clippers. You'll receive a second bloom as soon as new shoots with buds grow. You might obtain a third or fourth if the weather stays warm into the fall and you keep removing spent blossoms.
