Cross “ The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” with “ Fatal Magnet,” also abate some of those iconic pressure and you have commodity akin to “ When the Bough Breaks,” a serviceable domestic suspenser that’s not quite the well-waxed machine that it could be.
John and Laura Taylor (Morris Chestnut, Regina Hall) are an upmarket New Orleans couple — he’s a hotshot counsel, she’s a hotshot cook — whose an incapability to conceive a child together leads them to hire the seductive, youthful Anna (Jaz Sinclair) as a surrogate mama.
But Anna, sweet and humble though she first seems, has a questionable swain, Mike (Theo Rossi), who gives John and Laura pause. Despite that and many other early warning signs, the Taylors, especially the eager Laura, grasp Anna, and the baby- timber begins.
In short order, however, the manipulative Anna moves forward with her and Mike’spre-planned scheme, which will combine rapacity, gouging and a kind of in-utero “ hostage” situation fueled, as we will latterly learn, by a surrogate mama’s legal claim to the power of the baby she’s carrying until she gives up that right. (This edict curiously turns out to be news to the hotshot counsel.)
Still, before effects start turning truly wiggy, events conspire to drive John and Laura to invite Anna to move in with them. Too close for comfort would be an understatement, especially as Anna begins to shamelessly flirt with the stalwart John in ways that prove awkward, disturbing, and tempting.
Meanwhile, John’s operative friend (MichaelK. Williams) uncovers information about Anna’s unsavory history, details of which, despite the weak reason that’s offered, ever escaped the agency that matched the Taylors with Anna.
Is Anna’s growing obsession with the bodacious daddy-to-be part of her original plan or commodity unanticipated and willful? Will the law really stay on Anna’s side no matter how crazy and dangerous she becomes? How will the fate of the vituperative, unpredictable Mike (no spoilers!) factor into Anna’s crooked charge?
.
These and other crucial questions pop up as John and Laura come inextricably drawn into Anna’s deadly whirlpool. Pen Jack Olsen’s lustrous script goes light on sense, credibility, and booby-trapping some of the story’s deeper ramifications, as it works its way toward the ineluctable, largely predictable final showdown.
Under the deft direction of Jon Cassar (“ Abandoned”), “ Bough” breaks little new or inspired ground as it spins out its mildly effective, sometimes silly exemplary tale.
