A fever is an elevation in your body temperature that occurs temporarily as a result of an illness. A fever is an indication that something unusual is going on in your body.
A fever in an adult can be unpleasant, but it normally isn't reason for alarm unless it reaches 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) or higher. A modestly increased fever in babies and toddlers might suggest a dangerous illness.
Fevers usually disappear after a few days. A fever can be treated with a variety of over-the-counter drugs, but it's sometimes preferable to let it alone. Fever appears to play an important part in your body's ability to fight against a variety of illnesses.
Symptoms
When your temperature climbs over the usual range, you have a fever. It's possible that your normal temperature is a bit higher or lower than the typical normal temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (37 C).
Additional fever signs and symptoms, depending on what's causing your temperature, may include:
Sweating
Shivering and chills
Headache
Muscle pain
Appetite loss.
Irritability
Dehydration
Deficiency in general
Frequent febrile seizures can occur in children aged 6 months to 5 years. Around a third of children who have had one febrile seizure will have another one within the next 12 months.
Taking a temperature
There are various varieties of thermometers available for taking a temperature, including oral, rectal, ear (tympanic), and forehead (temporal artery) thermometers.
The most accurate way to assess core body temperature is with an oral or rectal thermometer. Although practical, ear or forehead thermometers offer less precise temperature readings.
Doctors usually advise taking a temperature using a rectal thermometer in newborns.
Give the temperature reading and describe how it was taken to your or your child's doctor when reporting a fever.
When to see a doctor
Fevers aren't always a cause for concern - or a reason to see a doctor. However, there are times when you should seek medical help for your newborn, kid, or yourself.
Infants
In babies and toddlers, an unexplained fever is more concerning than in adults. If your kid is experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your child's doctor right once.
Has a rectal temperature of 100.4 F (38 C) or greater and is younger than 3 months.
Between the ages of 3 and 6 months, has a rectal temperature of up to 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.9 degrees Celsius) and appears especially irritable, sluggish, or uncomfortable, or has a temperature of more than 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.9 C).
Has a rectal fever of more than 102 F (38.9 C) for more than one day but no other symptoms between the ages of 6 and 24 months. If your kid has additional signs and symptoms, such as a cold, cough, or diarrhoea, you should contact his or her doctor as soon as possible.
Children
If your child has a temperature but is responsive — establishing eye contact with you and responding to your facial expressions and voice — and is drinking fluids and playing, there's usually nothing to worry about.
If your kid is experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your child's doctor right once.
Is irritable or listless, vomits frequently, has a strong headache or stomachache, or has any other symptoms that cause substantial pain.
After being left in a heated automobile, he developed a fever. Seek medical help right away.
Has had a fever for more than three days.
Has a drowsy demeanor and makes little eye contact with you.
Adults
If your temperature rises to 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius), you should see a doctor. If any of the following signs or symptoms accompany a fever, get medical help right away:
Headache that is severe
Unusual skin rash, especially if it progresses quickly
Sensitivity to intense light that is unusual
Neck stiffness and soreness while bending forward
Confusion in the mind
Constant vomiting
Breathing problems or chest discomfort
Pain in the abdomen or during urinating
Seizures or convulsions
