When to plant carrots

Carrots are simple to grow if planted in open, sandy soil during the colder blooming seasons of spring and autumn. Carrots can endure frost. They might take two to four months to develop, depending on species and local planting circumstances. Plant them in the spring and early summer for a year-round yield till the autumn. Let us closely understand how to and when to plant carrots?

When to Plant Carrots?
•    Plant seeds outside three to five weeks before the final springtime frost date for a summer crop.
•    Grow a new crop of seeds every three weeks until springtime to maintain a continual yield.
•    Sow seeds in mid- to late summertime, approximately 10 weeks before the first autumn frost, for a fall crop.

Selecting and Preparing a Planting Location
•    Carrots require full sunshine, yet they may handle partial shade as well.
•     In order for carrot root systems to easily push back into the ground, the soil must be absorbent, sandy or loamy, and light-filled.

How to Plant Carrots?
•    Instead of transplanting, experts suggest direct seeding in the garden. Carrots dislike having their roots disrupted.
•    Sow 1/4 inch deeply in rows 1 foot apart. Try to scatter seed evenly so that seeds do not grow together. Use a seed-sower to get the desired spacing.
•    Keep the soil wet by watering it shallowly on a regular basis. The soil must not build a hard crust on top for little carrot seeds to sprout; covered with a coating of vermiculite or fine manure to avoid a crust from growing.
•    Carrots can be sluggish to germinate. It might take 2 to 3 weeks for them to show any signs of development.

How to Grow Carrots?
•    Cover carrots carefully to conserve moisture, hasten germination, and keep the light from directly reaching the roots.
•    When seedlings reach an inch in height trim them so that they upright 3 to 4 inches apart. To avoid damaging the sensitive roots of the surviving plants, cut the tips with scissors rather than plucking them out.
•    To begin, water at least 1 inch (approximately 1/2 gallon per sq. foot) every week, increasing to 2 inches as the roots grow.
•    Weed regularly, but take care not to disrupt the roots of the young carrots.
•    Fertilize 5 to 6 weeks after planting with a low-nitrogen but high-potassium and phosphorus fertilizer.

Carrot Harvesting Methods and Timing
•    A carrot's flavor usually improves as it gets smaller.
•    When the preferred maturity or size is attained, harvest it. Carrots should have a diameter of 1- 1 ½ inches.
•    Harvest carrots before average temperature get too hot if you're growing them in the spring and summer months, as the warmth can induce carrot roots to become fibrous.
•    After one or more frosts, carrots taste even better. Frost prompts the plant to begin depositing energy levels of sugar in its root for subsequent use. Protect carrot tops with an 18-inch surface of shredded leaves after the first hard frost in the fall to keep them from rotting.
