Golf's attribution goes out to the Scots, however, there are many documentations of several sticks and ball games throughout the past. Even the Dutch played a similar game of hitting a leather ball to reach a target of several years. However, the Scottish sport is different from every other similar game due to a very significant reason. The Hole! Golf traces its discovery, dated back to 15th century Scotland. Let us explore, when was the golf invented and the major historic events in association with it.
Golf: Scottish History
In 1458, a Scottish Parliament Act named the game as ‘Golf’. Alongside football, a ban was imposed on the game. The prohibition came from Scotland's King James II, as he looked upon it as a deviation from military training. He considered practicing archery to be more worthwhile. There were several such restrictions throughout the entire 15th century. However, after the intervention of the Treaty of Glasgow in 1502, the restrictions on the game were eliminated.
Today's the Scotts take a lot of pride in their legacy and continue to pull the audience from all over the globe!
The Game's Rules Development
The oldest documented rules for Gold schedule back to the year 1744. The prestigious company of Edinburgh Golfers published certain articles on rules and regulations for playing Golf. The old piece of golf history, which now has its place in the National Library of Scotland, provided fame to the Muirfield club. It is the longest surviving club in Golf's history.
Global Spread of Golf
Scottish soldiers and immigrants had a massive role to play in Golf's history. During the 18th century, they spread the game across the British Isles and from the 19th century, the sport started to gain international exposure. The oldest Golf rescued outside Britain is traced in nearby France, with the creation of the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (1829) and the club at Pau in 1856. By 1880, the game became popular in Ireland, different parts of Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Singapore and South Africa.
In Britain, the game started being a familiar name. By 1880, the country had ten golf courses which eventually upgraded to 1000 by 1914.
Getting Familiar in America
America enjoyed Golf in the 18th century and there's strong evidence to support that. South Carolina Golf Club came into existence in 1787, after the Golf equipment shipment incidence of Charleston, 1739. The Royal Gazette of New York City in 1779, had an advertisement for golf clubs and balls. However, compared to other countries in the globe where the sport became popular early, in America, no real spotlight came on it until the 19th century. The United States Golf Association came to thrive in 1894, to be the brand ambassador of the game in states. By 1910, it was the host to 267 golf clubs.
Wrapping Up
The sport is now a part of many international events including the Asian Games, Summer Olympics, Ryder Cup, Curtis Cup, EurAsia Cup, Walker Cup to name a few.
