When was the fax machine invented?

Since its beginnings in the 1800s, the fax machine has had a direct effect on the progress of communications technology. Alexander Bain, a Scottish inventor, is credited with inventing the first fax machine. Bain invented and patented a two-dimensional picture reproduction device in 1843, which considerably enhanced the telegraph. English scientist Frederick Blakewell showed the usage of a different sort of the fax machine in 1841, which varied from Bain's invention in its transmission technique. Giovanni Caselli, an Italian abbot, invented the first commercial facsimile system in 1863. Unlike its predecessors, it was a success. It laid down the groundwork for the current fax machine but, it took another century before fax technology took off.

Arthur Korn invented the optical scan function in 1902, which revolutionized the newspaper industry by allowing photographs to be conveyed. In 1924, AT&T moved things even farther by introducing wire transmission of photos, and the following year, RCA made the same technology wireless. Color fax was also created in the same year, by AT&T. The Xerox business built the first identifiable form of what we now call the telephone fax-in 1964, although the technology that led to that improvement was developed much earlier.

Fax machines had become typical commercial equipment by the end of the 1970s, and businesses continued to enhance their devices to do more. The copy and scan functions were added to fax machines in the early 1980s, resulting in the first all-in-one devices. Until the late 1990s, when cell phones began to replace landlines, these were the peak years for faxing, and faxes were used for all sorts of corporate communication.

Fax usage among consumers has decreased as residential landlines have become less widespread. But several businesses, such as healthcare, insurance, finance, and technology, continue to rely on faxes to convey secure communications.
