Today I am going to make a leap in time and go back to the 80s. Where am I right now? Let me take you back to the eighties! I close my eyes and the first thing I see before me is neon colours, fancy hairstyles, cool clothes. I think of big names, such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Wham. But also of the rap and hip-hop time when I was in high school and wrote my own rap lyrics, wore Nike shoes with chequered laces and a baseball jacket and a baseball cap with the name Rams on it. It was the time when Neneh Cherry had a number one hit with Buffalo Stance. You wanted to look the same. Beautiful gold chains, big earrings, lots of rings on your fingers. It was also the time when you wore Smiley t-shirts or sewed iron on your denim jacket or jeans. Or you wore jeans with wide legs and you put pieces of fabric in between at the sides to make them even wider and hipper. My favourite Stadium Rock hit at that time was Paradise City of Guns 'N Roses. And when I was fifteen years old, I heard The Cure for the first time. That was awesome! Their music is so unique and I listen to their music over and over again. It's never boring. My favourite movie at that time was Top Gun with one of the most beautiful lovesongs Take My Breath Away of Berlin.

80's Music Styles 


In the 80s, we see different musical styles succeeding each other. We see a shift from punk, to a new music style, namely new wave. New wave is characterised by different musical styles, like punk, synthpop, alternative rock, ska. Besides new wave, we still see disco hits, rock'n roll remains a basis that remains within the music, rock and then we see with bands like Guns 'N Roses a current of stadium rock. Next to stadium rock and electronic music, we also see rap and house. Neneh Cherry is one of the most important female rappers of the time, entering the charts with a number one hit, Buffalo Stance. De La Soul is also one of the most popular rap groups of the time, but we should definitely mention big names such as N.W.A., L.L. Cool. J., Run DMC, Tone-Loc, Tony Scott, SALT-N-PEPA.


New wave

When you think of newwave, you think of bands like Duran Duran, The Cure, but you also think of Alphaville, Talking Heads, Dead or Alive, Depeche Mode. New wave is a style of music that contains a mixture of styles and that you can't really name. It is similar to punk, but mixed with other musical styles. In new wave, you can hear influences of rock'n roll, punk, pop and also synthpop. Bands from the 80s bring the new wave each in their own style ranging from pop, synthpop, like the bands Duran Duran, Human League, Pet Shop Boys to darker tones in the music, like The Cure. Characteristically, new wave bands resembled punk bands in appearance. Their hair was often cropped and they also wore eye make-up and black eyeliner. Asymmetrical hairstyles were also characteristic of new wave. Some New Wave bands also played other musical styles, such as pop, rock, ska, reggae, funk, psychedelic. You can also see a shift in style in some new wave bands. Where they start with new wave, it later changes to pop or rock.
