Er are 2 explanations, how the chocolate letter originated.

  • The chocolate letters could have their origins from the Middle Ages. In the monastic schools, letters of bread dough were used, when learning to write. After the language, the letters were eaten as a reward.
  • It could also be that it came from the 19th century. Then the presents were put under a sheet. And to indicate for which child the gifts were, lay a letter on top, made from bread dough. You can already see those letters of bread dough or cake on the paintings from the 16th century. So it was cookie letters then.

The chocolate letter as we know it came at the end of the 19th century. Then chocolate letters were made at the factory. The chocolate was poured into metal molds.During World War II, the Verkade factory made letters of language language. Because there was no chocolate in the war, if it was there, it was way too expensive.
