In recent years, the former footballer has become the emblem of the fight against racism.

On August 26, 2016, the San Francisco 49ers receive the Green Bay Packers in one of the NFL's preseason matches. As in every encounter, everyone stands up to listen to the US national anthem, all but Colin Kaepernick. The quarterback made an unprecedented decision in protest against a series of deaths of African-American citizens in that year, at the hands of American police, that led to the 'Black Lives Matter' movement.

“I am not going to rise to show my pride for a flag of a country that oppresses black and colored people. For me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish of me to look the other way. There are bodies on the streets and people charging while they leave freely from murder," Kaepernick explained about their inaction.

In the next match, the 49ers player changed his mind by considering that he also had to honor the soldiers who have fought for the country through a conversation with NFL veteran and former NATE Boyer. From there, he was born his famous pose with his knee lying on the ground that he repeated in all the games of the season and that many of his colleagues by profession have imitated.

The knee on the floor quickly became a sign of protest against racism that lasts until today and one of the symbols of the 'Black Lives Matter' that is again gaining strength in recent days after George Floyd's death.
