Whole overload
During the year the Netherlands houses winter geese (migratory and winter guests) and summer geese (breeding birds and summer geese). What species are these exactly?
There are about 2 million geese wintering in the Netherlands. They arrive at the ryegrass with which our country is covered by intensive dairy farming. In South Holland there are more than 140,000 geese. It is mainly about the greyish goose, coarse goose, Nile goose and Canadian goose. For a better natural balance, the number of geese should be 40,000. Within nature reserves, the geese cause damage to young plants by trembling and trampling. In addition, the geese pollute the surface water in such a way that explosive growth of blue-algae occurs, which in many places worsens the water quality and also makes recreational swimming impossible. Geese also displace meadow birds, which are bad in terms of numbers.
Goose nuisance further consists of:
Endangering road safety
Dirting sidewalks and bicycle paths with their droppings
The entry of feces. (Food safety and/or contamination hazard)
Noise nuisance (residential centres)
Vraatal crops
