#Testicles vary in both shape and size. Each individual is unique, and this means that there is no way all organs can be the same. It is common to find one testicle being slightly larger. It is also possible to find one testicle hanging lower and there is nothing wrong with this. To understand this, let’s start with the basics. So, what are testicles? They are two male organs that are within the scrotum. They play two major roles in the body: making sperms and the production of the hormone testosterone. Sperms are male gametes and testosterone regulates many body processes, such as puberty. It is the hormone responsible for the growing of facial hair, development, and maturation of male muscles, and deepening of the voice. Small balls have many causes, and it’s only fair to look at other ways that can measure how small or big testicles are. There is one measurement that examines the volume and states that normal testicles should be around 20 cubic centimeters.
Also, doctors can examine the length of testicles and, on average, normal testicles should be between 4.5-5.1 centimeters. Small balls can affect men, which can affect their self-esteem and relationships quality. Men with small balls are often harshly judged and this can make them withdraw from society and end up in depression. The best thing is that it is possible to correct this deformity to enable you to live a normal life. The treatment depends on how severe the condition is and even if it cannot be corrected at all, some procedures can help improve your conscience. To begin with, let us see what causes small balls.
Low Levels of Testosterone. Testosterone levels are one factor that determines the size of your balls. Scientists have proven that testicular volume alongside body mass index (BMI) is the perfect predictor of testosterone levels. This means that some people with low levels of testosterone usually have small balls. This does not mean everyone with reduced testosterone amounts has small testicles. That is why it is very important to examine other factors besides balls’ size. Such symptoms include low libido (sex drive), chronic fatigue, depression, mood changes, difficulty having an erection or maintaining one, etc. All these symptoms can signify low testosterone levels in males.
Congenital Malformations. Our DNA plays an important role in determining how well our bodies function. Every child shares his/her parent’s DNA, which determines how a child will be born. This means that if a child inherits defective DNA, that child will be born with certain genetic conditions. A disease that a child is born with is known as a congenital disease or disorder. Many congenital malformations cause small balls, and a good example of such a condition is Klinefelter syndrome. Men with such conditions are usually taller than usual and have smaller balls than the same men of the same age. Small balls produce less testosterone and therefore, all the functions of testosterone in such men are usually impaired. Ideally, a normal male usually has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, unlike their women counterparts, who have two X chromosomes. However, Klinefelter patients usually have two or more X chromosomes. Klinefelter also affects the brain and motor skills. The normal development of a child is usually impaired, and that explains why it is common to see behavioral and poor coordination in such children. At puberty, such children grow breasts, and most end up being infertile.
Varicocele. This is an enlarged swelling of the veins that surround the scrotum. This condition is common in men and seems to cut across all ages. Some men may experience pain and discomforts while others don’t experience any problem at all. It is possible to go for years without noticing that you have a varicocele, especially when there are no symptoms. Among many causes of male infertility in men, varicocele is one of them. According to research, 40% of men with varicocele are infertile, although some are fertile regardless of the same condition. On examination, men who have varicocele report having reduced testicles because of shrinking. The good news is that a varicocele is can be corrected through surgery successfully.
Testicular Cancer. Cancer happens because of the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Having testicular cancer can reduce the size of one testicle or both. One factor that can lead to testicular cancer is testicular torsion. Testicular torsion happens when a testicle rotates and twists the spermatic cord that brings blood to the scrotum. This reduction of blood flow causes sudden and often severe pain and swelling. It's difficult to distinguish testicular cancer from other types of cancer, especially because symptoms look similar. Symptoms of testicular cancer include a palpable lump(swelling) in the testicles, swelling of the testicles, enlarging breasts, dull pain in the back and abdomen, shortness of breath, fluid in the scrotum, etc. If these symptoms are not addressed, it makes the situation worse, and this then affects the amount of testosterone that your testicles produce. Again, as this continues, it affects the quality of sperm and can lead to infertility in the end.
Testicular Atrophy. Atrophy is the shrinking of an organ because of an underlying disease. It happens because the cells present in that organ reduce in size, therefore, affecting the entire organ. Many factors can contribute to the development of testicular atrophy. One of the many causes of this problem is a complication of a surgery done to correct an inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia occurs when a part of the membrane lining the abdominal cavity (omentum) or intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdomen. This happens mostly along the inguinal canal, which carries the spermatic cord in males. The inguinal hernia surgery can be successful, but if the healing process does not take place as expected, muscles can shrink abnormally, causing atrophy. HIV, aging, alcohol-induced cirrhosis, syphilis, and other factors are also linked to testicular atrophy.
