Why aren't more people eating vegan?
It's good for your health and for the planet — yet most people aren't eager to switch to a vegan diet. In fact, recent research shows that the label 'vegan' sometimes scares off. Experts explain which psychological factors play a role in this. Meat consumption has been falling for years in both the Netherlands and Belgium. From a study by Wageningen Economic Research for example, it appears that in 2022, the average Dutch person ate 375 kilos of meat — half a kilo less than the year before. However, most people are not eager to switch to a purely plant-based diet. “Meat is the major culprit in global warming”, “It's natural for people to eat meat”, “Animals are treated badly in farms”, “Vegetarians always look pale”: these are common arguments for or against eating meat. But is it healthy not to eat meat? Can we get all the nutrients we need to live healthy from plant-based products?
Ann Meulemans teaches nutrition and health at the KU Leuven and analyses for us what nutrients meat has to offer us all. So the focus of this video is on vegetarianism and not veganism. So meat does not mean all animal products in this video. We are purely analyzing what nutrients meat has to offer and do not delve deeper into removing dairy and eggs from the menu.
