Why Communication Skills are Important

Communication is one of the most important skills which enable sharing of thoughts, feelings, ideas, facts and other relevant information. Impressive communication skills ensure clear and quick exchange of ideas and thoughts. It is not merely workplace setting which requires presence of good communication but these skills are equally important in personal lives as well.  Let us take a look at why communication skills are important and certain points that one should take care of while communicating.

Importance of communication skill
Presenting oneself verbally in an effective manner is crucial. Communication helps people to connect with other, share own feelings, thoughts, etc. and understand same of others. Scientifically communication or verbal communication (in the form or spoken words) is one of the qualities of human beings which make them different and more advanced from all other life forms.

Tips to remember while communicating
There are certain tips that an individual should take note of while communicating with someone. Considering these points enables the speaker to create a desired impact on the listener(s). Some points are described here:
•    Be confident: One should remain confident as well as assertive throughout a communication phase, it creates a positive impact on the listener as well as make them trust the speaker since the speaker is putting forwards the thoughts or facts in a confident manner. The speaker should maintain an optimum volume and tone throughout the period.  Shaking hands or legs, or fumbling with words presents the speaker as nervous and less confident about what he/she is trying to convey.
•    Maintain eye contact: When talking to someone, one should always maintain eye contact with the listener. Not maintaining eye contact shows lack of confidence and the authenticity of the information shared is also questionable.
•    Be a good listener as well: Along with presenting oneself verbally, active listening is another factor which ensures success of a communicating process.
How to improve communication skills
If one feels that he/she is not able to present oneself effectively, communication skills could be easily improved. It is all a matter of will power and a fair amount of practice.
•    Focus on active listening: In a communication process, both speaking and listening are equally important. Listening enables understanding of other’s thought processes or facts/information presented. Thus, a good listener is better able to formulate responses and keep a good control in a conversation.
•    Non-verbal communication is also crucial: A good communicator or speaker is the one whose body language, voice tone and other non-verbal cues matches with the verbal information being imparted. Thus, understanding of non-verbal cues and practice of correct use of the same also contributes to the effectiveness of a communication process.

Thus, we can see that how communication is important for human beings. It helps to build new relations, connect to new people as well as maintaining the present ones. Thus, be it personal or professional areas of life, effective communication skills are important.
