Why do dogs sigh?
Be sure every owner of a dog has ever experienced this at one time or another:
Your dog lies down, often with its head on its front legs and sighs deeply.
Is he sad?? Disappointed? satisfied?
According to the US Kennel Club, it may be one of the above, but it always depends on context.
If the sigh is combined with half-closed eyes, this is an expression of pleasure.
When combined with fully open eyes this is an expression of disappointment, "I think you're not going to play with me..”
Stanley Coren, author of Understanding Your Dog for DummiesA dog's sigh is a simple emotional signal that ends an action.”
When the action was a reward, it signals sighing satisfaction.
Otherwise, the sigh signals the end of an effort.
