Menstruation, or period, is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman's monthly cycle. Every month, your body prepares for a possible pregnancy. If this does not happen, the uterus sheds its lining. This is menstrual blood, which leaves the body through the vagina. This blood is part blood and part tissue inside the uterus.
Periods usually start around age 12 and continue until menopause, around age 51. Most periods last between three and five days. In addition to bleeding, you may feel:
Abdominal or pelvic pain or cramps
Lower back pain
Swelling and pain in the breasts
Craving for a particular food
Irritability and mood swings
Headache and tiredness
A premenstrual syndrome is a group of symptoms before menstruation begins. It can include emotional as well as physical symptoms.
Consult your healthcare provider if you experience major changes in your cycle. This can be a sign of other problems that may need to be addressed.
What is the cause of menstruation?
Menstruation occurs due to changes in the body's hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers. The ovaries release female hormones, which are called estrogen and progesterone. These hormones cause the inner lining of the uterus (which could later become the mother's womb) to increase in size. The inner lining increases until it is ready for a fertilized egg to nest in it and begin to develop. If there is no fertilized egg, the lining breaks and the uterine tissue comes out of the vagina as blood. This same process happens over and over again.
How is ovulation related to menstruation?
Ovulation is the release of an egg by an ovary. The same hormones that cause the lining of the uterus to increase also cause an egg to leave one of the two ovaries. The egg travels through a narrow tube, called the fallopian tube, into the uterus.
If the egg reaches the uterus and is fertilized by a sperm, it attaches itself to the wall of the uterus, where it will develop into a baby over time. But, if the ovum is not fertilized, the uterus removes the tissue that lines its interior and bleeds, causing menstruation.
