Causes of Vomiting:
Viral gastritis.
The most common cause is a viral stomach infection. It is also known as the "stomach flu." A common cause is Rotavirus. The illness begins with vomiting and then diarrhea may appear within 12-24 hours.
Food poisoning: This causes vomiting within hours of eating the contaminated food. There may be diarrhea afterward. The cause of these symptoms are toxins from bacteria in food that have begun to spoil, such as staph in egg salad.
Ibuprofen: Medicines that contain ibuprofen (such as Advil) can irritate the stomach. If taken on an empty stomach, they can cause vomiting.
Food Allergy: Vomiting may be the only symptom of an allergic reaction to a food.
Vomiting appears quickly after eating food:
The most common food allergies are due to peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish.
Cough: A strong cough can also cause vomiting. This is common in children with reflux or regurgitation.
Motion sickness Vomiting and dizziness can be caused by movement:
This type of motion sickness is common especially in boats and also in certain amusement park facilities, such as spinning wheels. Its causes are largely genetic.
Migraines. In children, most migraines also involve vomiting.
Serious causes. Vomiting on its own (without diarrhea) should stop after about 24 hours. If it lasts more than 24 hours, the causes are likely to be more serious, such as appendicitis, kidney infection, diabetes, or head injury. A serious cause in babies is pyloric stenosis. (More on this below).
Cyclic Vomiting: Cyclical vomiting is the most common type of recurrent vomiting attack. The vomiting attacks start and end quite suddenly. They usually occur in children who later develop migraines.
Pyloric Stenosis (Serious Cause)
This is the most common cause of true vomiting in babies.
Vomiting appears between the age of 2 weeks and 2 months
Vomit comes out in a strong stream.
After vomiting, the baby is hungry and wants food.
Cause: The pylorus is the lower part of the stomach, which connects the stomach to the intestine. In these babies, the pylorus becomes too narrow.
Risks: Weight loss or dehydration
Treatment: It is cured with surgery.
Vomiting Scale
Mild: 1 - 2 times a day
Moderate: 3 - 7 times a day
Severe: You vomit all or most of what you drink, or vomit more than 7 times a day.
The severity of vomiting is more related to its duration than its volume. At the beginning of the disease, it is common for the child to vomit everything he takes for 3 or 4 hours. The child then usually stabilizes and vomiting is milder.
The main risk of vomiting is dehydration. Dehydration means that the body has lost too much fluid.
The younger the child, the greater the risk of dehydration.
Dehydration: How to Tell
The main risk of vomiting is dehydration. Dehydration means that the body has lost too much water.
Vomiting with watery diarrhea is the most common cause of dehydration.
Dehydration is one reason to see a doctor right away.
Your child can become dehydrated if he doesn't drink a lot of fluids and:
The urine is dark yellow in color and has not been urinated in more than 8 hours.
The inside of the mouth and tongue are very dry.
There are no tears when your child cries.
Blood return time test greater than 2 seconds. First, squeeze your thumbnail until it turns pale. Release it and count the seconds it takes to turn pink again. Ask your doctor to show you how to do this test.
A severely dehydrated child is too weak to stand up. You could also get dizzy when trying to stand up.
