Why do my cats get eyes boogers?

1.Dry eyes

Dry eyes is known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. This is a condition whereby your cats do not produce good amount of tears or produce poor quality tears that will bring about adequate lubrication to the eyes.

 Dry eyes could lead to red eyes and  inflammation of the cornea. If left untreated it could lead to blindness.

Therefore, observe your cat very often. If it's got dry eyes, endeavor to take it to a veterinarian.



2. Uveitis

This is a painful  inflammation condition of the middle layer of the eyes (the uvea). The uvea is the eye part that make up of the iris.

The iris is a circular part that controls the colour of the eyes and the size of the pupils.

Uveitis could be caused by infection such as felin immunodeficiency virus and autoimmune condition (a situation whereby cats produce antibodies against it own body).


 Cats with uveitis normally paw at the inflamed eyes and some cats avoids every kind of touch. They usually squint or close their eyes.

Uveitis tend to cause the discharge of boogers on the eyes.



3. Watery eyes

Do your cats have tearing eyes? Watery eyes isn't altogether bad, it's the excess of it that isn't good.


 Wet eyes is a sign that your cat's eye is in a defence mode against some kind of threat.

But just like I said earlier, it shouldn't be too much and almost everyday.


Inflammation of the tissues around the eyes of the cat along with watery discharge from the eyes could be a sign that your cat has conjunctivitis. It is also called pinkeye.
 Conjunctivitis can be caused by dust, allergy and inflammation and feline herpes virus. Pinkeye is quite contagious and it affects cat at different ages especially the young ones.

 Vaccination is the best way to keep this in check. Therefore, always take your cats to  a veterinarian earlier enough, so they can get vaccinated.
 
4. Cornea disorder
The cornea is a dome-shaped area that covers the surface of the cat's eyes. When the cornea is disordered, there tend to be to much production of tears, excessive blinking and cloudiness. This may occur as a result of injury, ulceration and inflammation.



5. Feline upper respiratory infection
This is the major cause of eyes discharge in cats. The symptoms is seen in gummy pus-like discharge from the eyes.


 Feline upper respiratory infection comprises of different conditions such as;
Feline calicivirus, pneumonitis, protozoa, herpes virus and bacteria.
