According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, about one in 1,000 Americans has appendicitis, or inflammation of the appendix, and pain around the belly button is often the first symptom. According to doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center, pain in the navel area can begin in the second trimester. The pain usually also travels from the belly button to the lower right side of the abdomen, and you may also experience back pain.
Infections
Infections can cause pain in the navel and throughout the abdomen. Indigestion is usually felt above the navel area and can cause pain and discomfort nearby. As the fetus grows, the muscles and skin of the abdomen stretch and this can cause pain in women with both inward and outward belly buttons known as innies or outies. In some women, the navel, or navel, protrudes due to pregnancy, and constant contact with clothing can cause skin irritation and pain in the protruding navel.
Umbilical hernia
Navel pain can also be caused by an umbilical hernia, which can appear or worsen during pregnancy. Although umbilical hernias are usually painless in children, they can cause abdominal pain and discomfort in adults. A hernia can also cause constipation or nausea and vomiting (bloating doesn't cause these problems). Tight abdominal muscles can increase the risk of developing a hernia.
Abdominal pain
Appendicitis can be distinguished from other causes of pain near the navel because the pain usually begins or migrates to the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Appendicitis pain is usually different from regular abdominal pain.
In the early stages of appendicitis, a person may notice a dull pain around the belly button, but this pain may radiate to the upper part of the stomach. This pain can start early in pregnancy and can be felt all the time due to the pressure the baby puts on the uterus and around the belly button. An inflammatory bowel disease that usually affects the small and/or large intestines, Crohn's disease causes pain behind the navel that feels like a dull ache, usually sharp, cramping 20 to 30 minutes after eating pain. Navel pain is a potential sign of a hernia, according to the Mayo Clinic.
No medical cause
In other cases, belly button pain may be unremarkable and no medical cause for the pain can be found. Many mild conditions can cause navel pain that can even radiate to other parts of the body, including the pelvis, legs, and chest.
Mayo Clinic
For example, according to the Mayo Clinic, umbilical hernias generally do not require treatment unless they become large, become painful, or cause complications, such as blocking the flow of contents through the intestines. The most interesting thing is that enlarging the appendix does not give us pain in the place where the appendix is (in the lower right side of the abdomen, by the way).
Pain in and around the belly button can be an alarming sensation. This pain can be sharp and sudden or it may come in slowly. The pain can also feel like coming directly from the belly button. Although belly pain when stretching certainly seems mysterious, there are several potential causes. Here are some of the causes of belly pain when stretching.
Hernia
Hernias are when a part of the intestine or fatty tissues bulges out and creates pain especially when one stretches or coughs. A hernia is treated through surgery therefore it is advisable to visit a doctor immediately if you can feel a bulge near the belly button.
Constipation
This is one of the major contributions to belly button pain when you stretch. Getting constipation is common therefore it is best to include fiber and fluids in your diet and pay attention to your bowel movement. In case of constipation that lasts longer than two months, talk to your doctor.
Indigestion
Indigestion is commonly felt above the belly button and can cause pain and discomfort in the vicinity. To escape indigestion, avoid fatty fried foods that often bring on indigestion, also eat more slowly, and chew food completely can help combat the symptoms
Crohn's disease
This is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects the small intestines. Crohn's disease causes pain from behind the belly button and usually feels like a dull ache or a sharp cramping pain. However, if severe diarrhoea, fatigue, and weight loss are associated with this pain visit your doctor immediately. According to the mayo clinic, the cause of Crohn's disease is not yet known.
Umbilical strangulation
When born, doctors cut off your umbilical cord and the surrounding muscles heal. Sometimes those the abdominal muscles do not always close all the way. This leads to intestines or fatty tissues pushing through the opening thus creating a bulge.
Appendicitis
An appendix is located where the small and big intestines meet. If you are affected by appendicitis or the inflammation of the appendix you will experience pain around the belly button. This pain starts as more severe pain in the middle of the stomach and moves to the right lower quadrant of the abdomen.
The cause of appendicitis is also unknown but it is very common in persons between the ages of 15 and 30. This pain requires immediate medical attention. If the pain increases your appendix can rapture and this can occur between 42 to 72 hours of symptoms.
The resulting infection can be life-threatening therefore keep an eye out for pain that tends to get worse. These symptoms also tend to get worse when you breathe deeply, stretch or move. Other risks symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, constipation, and lack of appetite
If your doctor suspects appendicitis, tests will be required including an ultrasound. A doctor will observe you for 12 to 24 hours and if the condition is worse your appendix will be removed.
