This condition has been known to exist since ancient times, yet it has not yet been conclusively diagnosed as a medical condition. It has been variously termed: Alkeroidism (Alkaboile), Cario Dermatosis (CD), Ceramosedenoma in situ (CIS), and Corneal Keratosis (CK). When you feel a burning sensation when your belly button is exposed, it is likely that your red belly button is an example of keratosis, which is a skin condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of keratin (a protein that occurs in the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis).
Belly button itching & redness
Belly button itch is characterized by an itching sensation caused by a buildup of keratin (a protein that occurs in the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis).
Causes of a red belly button
No matter what you eat, you will see a red, raw, or "raw" looking belly button. Most belly button issues are caused by an unhealthy diet or a poor lifestyle.
The skin on your belly button is very thin, so it easily tears and bleeds easily, even if you aren't aware of it. This lack of elasticity and smoothness (caused by poor eating habits) causes the skin on your belly button to slough off, causing raw red areas.

The large intestine is responsible for processing waste. The body doesn't produce a lot of the enzymes required to digest food in a healthy manner.
Just like any other body part, the body needs to detoxify and cleanse to maintain optimal health.
Belly button irritation
Before I go into detail, I am going to briefly describe what is causing the irritation. For all those of you who have this condition and many more out there who have noticed this, and you don't know what's causing it, please feel free to comment and I'll be glad to try to answer any questions you may have!
I'm not the only person who has noticed an issue with their belly button.
Many belly button issues were reported by beachgoers around the world in a 2013 study done by James Wedeen, a cosmetic dermatologist in Chicago, IL.1 These are some of the typical red belly button issues reported:
Small red bumps in an area approximately the size of a penny or small dime. Bumps, which typically affect only a small part of the body. Bumps are located on only one part of the body.

If the red belly button is due to another cause, like a tear, like some people get when they stretch their skin, you might want to see a doctor. Redbelly buttons, especially if they look red or inflamed, could also be an indicator of a more serious condition. Redbelly buttons can be linked to infections of the urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, or skin ulceration.
In the United States, the current recommended treatment for a red belly button is heat treatment. Depending on the cause of the red belly button, this treatment will help to reduce swelling or heal the lesion. Heat treatment involves heating the skin for about a minute in either cold or warm water.
