Why Vaccination is Good

Immune system plays a vital role in human body. It supports body to fight against any foreign micro-organism which invades the body and is perceived as a threat. White blood cells are the designated immune cells which performs this function. Initially the body is not immune to a pathogen but once it encounters with the same, it fights with it as well as creates a memory for the same. This way, once a person is affected with some disease or infections, he/she becomes immune to it by means of memorizing it.
In case of fatal diseases i.e. the disease which could bring life threatening consequences including mortality, it becomes important to generate immunity before the person actually gets the disease/infections. And for this purpose, researchers developed vaccination. Let us understand what vaccination is and why vaccination is good?

What is a vaccine?
A vaccine is a kind of immunity booster to the body. A vaccine usually consists of dead or weakened germs for a particular disease for which immunity is to be developed in the body. Once these germs are injected into the body, the body recognizes the foreign antigen and starts manufacturing antibodies against it. After this, if the body again ever encounters with the same pathogen or antigen, it has memory to recognize and effectively fight with it. This type of immunization is called active immunity. This immunity stays life-long.
There are certain cases like a snake bite or some ingesting something poisonous where direct antibodies are required. There is no time to develop immunity or antibodies otherwise it could be life-threatening. In such a case ready-made antibody vaccine is injected into the body to instantly help the body fight the foreign antigen. This type of immunity is called passive immunity. It is an instant form of immunity that stays for a particular time and is not a lifelong immunity.

Why vaccination is good?
Vaccination is important as it safeguards us against various life-threatening infections or diseases. As soon as a child is born, the doctor instructs the parents to complete the basic vaccine schedule to ensure safety of a child against various unavoidable common infections/diseases. These vaccines are scheduled to be given in the initial years of life followed by booster doses in upcoming years. There are several reasons why vaccination is important.
Some of them are described here:
•    Vaccination helps a person to live a healthy life.
•    Vaccination helps the body to fight against several diseases.
•    It can be life-saving in case of snake bites or any other emergency.
•    It helps in strengthening of immune system of a person.
•    It helps in eradicating diseases such as polio, leprosy, etc.
•    Certain fatal diseases such as COVID, polio etc. could only be controlled with the help of vaccination.

No wonder there is a widespread myth about dangers of vaccination. But being practical, one should always remember that vaccination is not a danger but a protective shield against many deadly diseases. Lastly, one should remember that vaccination doesn’t prevent occurrence of a disease or infection but prepare a body in advance to fight against it with least damage to the body.
