The Netherlands appears to be pivotal in the global export of plastic waste to non-western countries

Research by Plastic Soup Foundation has shown that the small Netherlands plays a major role in the shadowy trade in plastic waste. For example, in 2021, our country was the EU's largest exporter of plastic waste to non-OECD countries.

Nina (15) lives in Indonesia on the Brantas River, which is full of plastic waste. The plastic waste in the river comes from nearby recycling factories that process plastic waste from rich countries, including from the Netherlands. Due to poor regulations, part of it ends up in nature, or even worse, people burn it, which poses extreme health risks!
