On the bay window in Riley Matthews' bedroom, something was going on. Destiny had just attempted to confront her so-called friends. She didn't know quite yet whether she had succeeded. To her, they seemed shocked. They had just seen Destiny in a whole new light.
"We just wanted to help you," Riley's palm was on Destiny's arm. "You just seemed so lonely." Did she seriously think her voice, her gestures and her radiation were fooling anyone?
But their friend had no time and no patience to listen to their pathetic explanations. How could have this happened to her? They had attempted to befriend her just because they believed she was a charity case.
So that was the situation. That was the reason the gang had been attracted to her at first place. Charity case. Help. Lonely. The words simply wouldn't stop ringing in Destiny's head. Tears brimmed in her eyes. She felt used. Like a stupid handkerchief that anyone could throw out in the dustbin.
The threatening tears fell from Destiny's eyes as a quiet sob escaped her mouth. She was now crying and the gang was not able to handle this. They could only watch as she was barely standing on her feet, gripping tightly Riley's dresser, afraid she would fall any minute.
Lucas reached out to rest his hand on her arm, to comfort her, but she didn't let him. She pulled away quickly and cried angrily, not believing how daring he was for wanting to feel her. "Don't touch me!"
Her sobs were scaring Riley and her friends. They had never dealt with such thing. That would be their first time.
When Destiny felt like she was calm enough, that her mental breakdown had ended, she slowly turned to face the gang. "You want to know more about me?"
Riley slowly moved her head up and down, nodding to give Destiny a signal that she could speak.
The upset girl inhaled and exhaled before she began:
"My mother has died when I've been very young. Maybe two years old. Maybe younger. I don't know," she shrugged, being sincere. If they wanted the whole truth, they were going to get it. "I lived with my aunt, uncle and cousin Hope. But they didn't treat me well. They would neglect me and often isolate me. I was not allowed to meet the world."
"But a few months ago, back in Maryland, I met Keith. He was the first person to love me for who I was. He helped me find out that my English teacher was my biological father."
The gang was staring with eyes wide open, trying to process the information.
"The only thing I have from my mother are her letters. The ones she has addressed to the destiny. That's where my name comes from."
With that, Destiny stopped her story. She felt like she would burst into tears if she talked more about her mother. The woman she had known for only two years of her life, before a fatal car accident had interrupted her short life. Jennifer Hartwell had barely lived twenty-seven years. So young.
Riley raised her eyebrow. "And?"
Did she seriously want more after this? Sick. So sick.
Before she left, Destiny screamed so loudly, like she wanted to wake them up, to make them realize who they truly were. They were monsters in her eyes and they had to know that. "You're all messed up! You need to straighten up your priorities!"
And with that, she left the Matthews' apartment. As she was walking down the streets to the block of flats she lived in with her father, she knew people were looking at her, her messy hair and tearstained face. She knew they were questioning what had happened to her. But they weren't going to get answers. Only one person truly deserved to know.
That night Destiny and Maximilian had their first real father-daughter conversation. She had confided in him. He now knew everything - about Tyler, about Riley and the gang, even about Sarah. Some things were going to change. First - Destiny's schedule. For sure she was not going to have History for the first period anymore. She would have to apologize to Matthews and Topanga, maybe even to Katy Hart, even though she didn't know her well enough. Second - the friendship between Maximilian and Matthews was going to be tense.
"Thank you, Daddy," Destiny hugged Maximilian for goodnight, before going to her room. Everything was so new to them. If anyone had told them a year ago what was going to happen to them in the future, neither of them would believe any of that.
She sat down on her desk with her thick notebook and her pen in front of her, ready to begin what she was best at. But before she was unhesitant to pour her feelings and get lost in the written words, she looked up through her window, right where she could see the stars.
"Hi, Mommy," she spoke, looking at the brightest star in the sky. Her mother.
